so, ive been defected for my exhaust 2 or 3 times before, not sure but anyways, its loud and im sick of it.
I found my stock rear muffler ( twin tip) and im thinking of just getting a custom 2" exhaust made to look factory with the factory rear box and a hot dog resonater in the middle.
ppl say im crazy but i dont really care, the power i will lose doesnt bother me, its got plenty ayways. At least i wont be scrapping the stock muffler all the time like i do with the tanabe. the car will be lower too.
Im interested to hear what it sounds like lol. i wonder if it will be quiet or not.

shouldn't it be quieter with the stock box? I thought stock was always quiet. But then don't know if you're gonna have a bigger diameter pipe. :p Let us know if your setup (2" pipe + stock box + hot dog resonator) is quiet though. :)
I haven't gotten defected for my exhaust.. *touch wood* but i'm seriously considering going back to stock.. :( i've had 3 close calls already.. :(

Mate if you want a nice quiet exhaust which is only loud when on it get this. 2 1/4 inch cat back resonator in middle and Magnaflow street series oval muffler on back, that will be nice, i have that setup and i love it. quiet whiile normal cruisin bit of noise when on the vtec. normal driving you can hear it but its not intrusive its just i nice tone. never get anoying.

my setup with the same engine as yours wasnt loud, it was alot like you are describing your exhaust.
it was when i put in the DOHC engine that it got alot louder, the noise is good but its really L O U D. its not very loud when cruising but when your on it it is.
i also want to have stock exhaust so i dont get done by the cops.

I'd say do it! And if you still want a bit of a purr, you could always weld a nice tip onto the stock box. I think the muffler is the key to a quiet exhaust, so it should sound pretty close to stock at most times, with a tuned, viscious snarl when you accelerate

got a fine in the mail today for driving a vehicle causing undue noise- from the start of last month........$211.00 argh, damn exhaust.

Just think of all the stuff you could have bought with that! Maybe a 'JDM' gearknob or perhaps even a tank full of optimax (almost)! LoL!
JK, but thats a bit of a worry if you are getting fines in the mail. I'd weld that stock one on quicksmart and tell us how it goes. Go for the sleeper look (sound)!

Get some Supersprint exhaust they are nice and quite (stright through design) for around $620 it might be little bit pricy... but it is sure to be one of the quiest exhaust around...
go the stock system man, exhaust give like 1hp anyways...
defects are gay

What muffler do you have on at the back at the moment??
Is your exhaust louder at certain revs, or is it throughout the whole rev range? If it is louder at certain points, you can try this option, it may work for you and you may be able to keep the exhaust- Weld a second resonator in immediately behind the first one, either the same size as the piping or slightly smaller than the pipe diameter... you'll lose almost no power with doing this
Any rate, tell us what happens :)

the resonator in the middle makes all the difference!!!
ive got stock pipe, magnaflow street oval on the bak, and no
middle resonator, and at times its starts to annoy the fuk out of me
and is definately over the legal limit, still luv it tho :D

hmmm, my exhaust is a 3 inch straight through, i do have a cat, but, let's just say my muffler is only for looks... :P as in, i don't have a real one, it's just metal made up to look like one, and it's quiet as, maybe because i don't thrash it, if you're worried about the noise, see what you can do to silence it, but don't get rid of the tanabe exhaust, that's so sad

wait, what are your mods? you're exhaust sounds a little large, is it cat back or full? duel or single pipe?

Man, I just put a hole in my exhaust from running over a small spiky thing. Now it sounds like a sports exhaust, and after a 2hr drive from Newcastle, i cant believe i used to like that noise! I cant wait to have silence again!

engine runs stock header and A pipe, stock accord cat converter with 2.5 inch single pipe.
only other mod is cold air pod filter on stock intake.
on friday im changing the rear muffler to a lukey sports type with twin tips. it will still have a note just not so loud.

I was always under the impression that the tanabe hyper was very quiet. I was considering going for exactly the same setup you have ,after reading this I might just think twice about it :S

guys, i got my car out of the shop, the muffler is not a straight through design so i thought it would be quieter but its only a little bit quieter. the good thing is, it doesnt drone as much inside the car :-) i have a twin straight cut 3" tip on it. looks aight.
the shop charged me $282.90 for an this which is basically a press bent axle back exhaust of mild steel with a generic muffler and tip.
i think thats expensive, anyone else think so?
Scourge
26-11-2004, 11:55 PM
heck of alot cheaper than genuine parts....
I can't believe you guys are having trouble getting your cars to be legal noise with aftermarket exhausts. A 2.5-3" exhaust with intermediate muffler and or resonator and a good quality rear muffler should have no problems - and flow well also. if you can't pass with a good quality rear muffler like the hyper medalion then maybe a good mandrel bent intermediate muffler as well will improve things...

it all depends where you go..
but you should have been able to almost pull a catback with that price
Dominik
27-11-2004, 05:32 PM
viperx, i think that was the price for a cat-back system. Pretty good if thats the case!
I just had the hole in my exhaust welded over... $49 which is a bargain for the absolute silence i have now :D
Cam, if you ever get sick of the exhaust, you should weld a stock muffler on to that system - i think there is nothing quite like watching modified cars get beaten by stock sounding cars!!!

the price was for axle back exhaust only. anyway, i was thinking about putting back on the stock muffler but i picked it up and shook it only to hear was sounded like sand rattling around in it and remembered when i first took it off the car it used to have a bit of a tinny sound somewhere in the rev range.
I have now heard the car from the side of the road and it is alot quieter but has a deep powerful crisp sound to it. very happy with it as all you can see from the back of the car is a couple of tips ( like a stock accord ) and a little bit of the muffler box. ( my mates travelling behind me with the tanabe would complain that their head lights would reflect off the muffler and blind them lol)
