hey guys, went for a cruise today with my boy and as he was driving behind me he said he saw a shot of black smoke, not dark but just enough for him to say its black smoke coming out of my muffler every time i step on it.
any ideas what the problem could be?
-honda civic coupe vti-r (em1) 2000

Normal on vtec engines if its not excessive.

If youre running aftermarket exhaust it will be more evident.

Its your cat burning the excess fuel coming thru the exhaust. During vtec you have longer duration and higher lift on the cams.
More air = more fuel.

normal for this to happen, my em1 does the same thing when i use vtec.

a high A/F ratio needs to be leaned out abit

Rich = too much fuel/not enough air in the air:fuel combustion ratio
Lean = too much air/not enough fuel in the air:fuel combustion ratio

Rich - Have ya fuel injectors cleaned and flow tested. Cheap.
Lean - This is rare. I've heard of it happening to people who have installed a CAI (gettin more air due to colder temperature ---> molecules more dense in cooler gas but same volume inhaled). It usually doesn't happen coz ya stock ECU will sense the extra air and compensate for the ratio by injecting more fuel.

isnt running rich, is white smoke?

white smoke is usually caused by blown headgasket and water/coolant entering the cylinder which burns and blows white smoke

The em1 does have 40L.

350km on normal driving sounds normal.

You can get 400-450 on semi highway. And probably touch 500km on all highway.

Remember that the b16 doesnt have that much down low torque. Going up slight inclines on a higher gear will actually give you a worse fuel economy than having it on a lower gear with higher revs.
You have to consider that revs does not directly reflect fuel consumption.

hey dude, yea if u gun it around every now and then ur expecting to get aroung 380kms, i was constantly getting around that much but recently i changed the fuel filter with my oils n after a couple of weeks ive been getting about the 410 to 420 for a full tank.
