I was driving to work this afternoon and noticed a loud metalic squeal/screetch sound coming from the rear side of the car. This noise happened both while braking and accelerating but only at low speed (ie only when the car was almost coming to a stop and only on initial acceleration) .
This happened for 3 braking/accelerating cycles but didn't happen after that.
Can anyone tell me what might have been the cause of the noise and whether I should be concerned.

A noise that you hear that isnt normal is always a concern, will it kill you probobly not, should you get it checked out? probobly.
go see a mechanic and see what he thinks

My car is due for it's 30,000km service Monday. The noise has gone for now. If it comes back again before Monday I'll take it in but I'm just curious what caused the noise.

could be your brakes being worn... usually makes a screechy sorta sound before they're actually worn...

its your rear brakes.
lightly pull up your handbrake and it'll stop.
I've had this happen to mine and my Mrs car many times.
there is no problem, its just annoying.
Like i said, lightly pull the handbake while travelling slowly and then let it go.
PS. In future, try not to post sound related problems.
We can't diagnose a noise over the internet.

A screeching sound will also occur when brake pads are worn down.
the screech is a wear indicator scraping on the disk to make the above mentioned sound. Its there to alert you about your worn pads.
From the description you gave in your OP, it does not sound like worn pads.

It only happened today. If it was happening all the time I'll capture the sound and post it.
My car had an oil change 3 months ago and the brakes were in good shape then and I am very easy on the brakes so I'm fairly sure that they are not worn yet.
You mentioned you had this sort of noise before. Does it happen constantly or is it intermmitent? As I mentioned earlier it happend for 2 or 3 minutes when I started my car but didn't make any noise over the next 20 minutes while I was driving to work.

Happens only in the 1st 2 or 3 minutes. The rear brake pads are sliding up against the disk and making that noise, after a bit of driving and heat, it disappears.
The noise i'm talking about sounds like running a wet finger over the round rim of a wine glass.
If you start to get intermittent moving onto constant screeching (metal against metal) sound, then its your brake pads.

Does this happen everyday you drive your car? I drove my car today and no noise at all.

We're not talking about my car, we're talking about yours......
its not important mate, just tug the hand brake a lil bit and its fine......
not important if it haoppens once a month, once a week, or everyday.....
I told you how to remedy the problem already....

Thanks for the advice but the dealer had better give me a better permament solution than that. First, that sound should not happen at all, and secondly there should be no need to pull the handbrake whilst driving.

All they will do is just spray some brake cleaner onto it...........
Its not really a fault.

Thats cool. Anything that helps is worth a go. And there is still 44 months warranty on the car so hopefully no out of pocket expenses.

Not really because I only work in the evenings and they will give me a loan car in the meantime. I'll see what they say when I take it in Monday.
