Hi,
I have a 1995 Civic Gli in good condition. However, I am currently having the starter motor replaced for the third time in about 14 months. When starting the car I get that over started noise, and no engagement of the engine. Can anyone explain what's happening. Thanks.

are you putting in recon staters, 2nd hand or new ?
have you replaced the torqu converter ring gear or flywheel ?

2nd that. Youve probably got a worn ring gear.
if your getting that over started noise then could be ringgear or flywheel. cos this noise means your starter motor is actually working, due to it making that noise

make sure the new starter motor u're putting in has the right voltage.
also, check your fuel pump or could just be your starter motor relay.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
i have the car at the service centre, starter motors are new, and they tell me they've checked there's no wearing. Are they talking about the torqu converter ringgear or flywheel? The noise is a metal scrapping like the ignition has been turned too far.

If you can hear that noise then the starter is working.
It sounds like either the units you are using don't have the right sized pinion or the ring gear is worn. D-series pinions should be 9 toothed and rotate clockwise.
Ring gear wear will cause premature failure of starter motors.

what is the ring gear? is it in the gear box or the starter motor?

The toothed section of your flywheel or converter flex plate assembly.
Transfers drive from the starter motor, down to your crank.

on an AT its not actually on the flex plate. its part of the torqu converter itself.

Just a final note, the service centre tried many different starter motors all no go. Electrician also tried without success. Turns out they were non genuine honda and they have they now put in a second hand genuine honda starter motor and all ok. It took 3 days to sort out no charge to me, hope it lasts!
