Hi everyone,

I've found a couple of videos on youtube which demonstrates the same noises that i'm experiencing on my DC5R. I was just wondering if these lifters? exist in k20a engines and if they can be fixed/replaced?

Any help is much appreciated, the sound is pretty annoying :thumbdwn:

EDIT: Feel free to move to "All Motor" section as required

Honda engines have rocker arms - a mechanism to amplify camshaft displacement. Functionally, as a piece to actuate the valve by means of the camshaft, they are similar to lifters.

They can (and should) be adjusted to provide just the right amount of gap to the camshaft so that contact is smooth. Unfortunately they can also go out of adjustment and start tapping on the rockers before opening the valve yielding the ticking sound you're hearing. It's common for Honda engines to tick to some degree - if it's annoying you probably just need a "valve adjustment".

I'm not familiar with the K series engine and don't know of any mechanics who work on K series engines - I do however know from experience that it's an easy (albeit tedious) job, especially for someone who's done it before, and shouldn't cost you too much money to have a professional do it for you.

Thanks for the informative write-up. Will any old mechanic be able to perform a valve adjustment? Or am I better off taking my DC5 to Hanny's?

you can hold a screw driver to the rocker cover and put your ear next to it or a stefascope to comfirm if the sound is coming from the valves.

I just got mine adjusted a few months ago by Honda. They charged me $160. But they need the car for most of the day coz the engine needs to be stone cold before they make the adjustments. I had that ticking sound before they did it, but now all is sweet. By the way its a K20 engine as well, if that helps. Also, I think it was called Tappet Adjustment, same thing as valve adjustment.
