2nd gear syncro is on it's way out

Either;
A) no more high revs shifting
B) Change the gearbox
C) Change gearbox fluid to Redline/Motul/Royal Purple for a temporary fix

firstly check the gearbox oil level.

a top-up should sort it (would be wise to change the gearbox oil if its never been done)

If it's only second gear that does this, and the oil is good, I'd say it's likely to be a worn synchro. How is 2nd gear engagement when the car is stationary? Leave it in neutral with your foot off the clutch pedal. Push the pedal down, try engaging 2nd gear. It should drop straight in - if it struggle, or it makes the grinding noise, it's likely a knackered synchro....

When was the last time you had the car serviced...
If its been awhile, as others have said ur gearbox oil needs be topped up..
Or looking into a new gearbox..

Worn synchros because 1st to 2nd shift doesn't do it.

how much is it 2 replace a synchros?

how much is it 2 replace a synchros?Well if it's a worn syncro, your gearbox will probably need more parts as well. It wouldn't be cheap.

Well if it's a worn syncro, your gearbox will probably need more parts as well. It wouldn't be cheap.

My DC2 has a failing 4th gear synchro. I double declutch from 4th to 5th and the gears don't grind no more.

I called around a few Honda specialists in Melbourne previously, and the general suggestion is to replace the whole gearbox with another second hand one for everyday piece of mind. Price including installation: in the region of $1K and up.

Or you can get the shop to tear down the whole box, order the knackered synchros and possibly some other worn bearings, and rebuild it. Cost: in the region of $1.5K and up.

Note these estimates were for a DC2. EG5 might be slightly cheaper.

Here's what I think, if you replace the whole box, it should be good for everyday driving and peace of mind expecially if done at a good shop. But if there are synchros starting to wear out in the box you just put in, there is a small chance that in a year or so the problem will come back.

If you rebuild your current box, it'll cost more but should last the life of the car, unless you discover upon opening the box that there is more than one set of synchros and bearings wearing out and you need to order even more parts to sort those out. gearbox parts are terrifyingly expensive, and labour intensive too.

For me now I just double declutch 4th to 5th to avoid the grind, and it's second nature while driving now.

Your synchro is worn. I used Castrol VMX80 for cold shift changes, make gearbox smoother.

A) Don't rev to 7k RPM
B) Clutch in and let the revs drop down to around 2k before changing to 3rd
C) Get synchro fixed...maybe $800-900? Dropping out the gearbox on a FWD is a bitch and will cost you a lot in labour. The synchro itself isn't too much...
