Ok here we go again.... Vtec noob of the year...

can you guys tell me the difference between DOHC and SOHC?

d16 (sohc)?

b16 (dohc)?

is the right?

Dude there is a button on our menu bar that reads "search" if you use that you wouldnt have to waste everyones time including yours!

i think you'll find one has an extra cam

which d16 are you talking about? i have a d16a8 dohc.

you might wanna do a search too. i think its already been covered

one has a "D" and the other has a "S" thats about it. nothing major. just a marketing scheme created by honda to sell more cars.

The 'S' stands for "Slap on a turbo", 'D' stands for "Don't have to unless you're really keen"

There is some great wealth of information on the Howstuffworks webiste on camshafts, and other basic noob questions on cars.

For people who want to learn fast about cams (DOHC/SOHC):

hmmm....i think you need to do abit more research...

everyone at one stage was a noooob

Double Over Head Cam
Single Over Head Cam

Depends on the Engine...

The 4 digit engine code does not specify how many camshafts are on the engine..

sohc has more power than dohc for sure!

SOHC = 1 cam shaft and less moving parts (usually).
DOHC = 2 camshafts.

DOHC seems to be the trend with erformance engines - but that's not to say you can't have a performance modded SOHC.

the US do heaps of performance mods with the SOHC. go to www.d-series.org they'll steer you in the right direction

some if not most of the fastest cars in the world are SOHC...
Bisi is hitting 9's in his honda NA allmotor 1.5 SOHC WOOT...

and a huge bunch of v8's etc .

well thats a pretty poorly backed up statement lol.

if u have a 16valve 4cylinder.. does it neccesarily have to be a twin cam. or even a DOHC.?

A lot of it is about sability at high revs. A DOHC motor is able to rev in the higher range because of the camshafts are directly above the valves and there are less moving parts. It does not nesasarily make it anymore powerfull.

Where are you getting your info from? Back of a cereal box.. DOHC = 2 cams (or 4 in the case of boxers and V's), how can it have less moving parts than a SOHC motor...

DOHC allow the motor to breathe better, playing a part in fuel efficiency, high rpms, among other things.

Err, twin & double are more or less the same thing. Unless you're a marketing executive trying to make one sound better than the other

Ok, A SOHC motor has 1 camshaft, so therefore you have to have a rocker arm over to the inlet valves and again over to the exhaust valves. Where as with a DOHC each cam shaft sits directly above the valves, one over the inlet valves and the other over the exhaust. You have just eliminated a moveing part in the case of the rockers.
As for a DOHC allowing to engine to breath better and playing apart in fuel efficiency, that depends on the Cam profile which is a different story.

Maybe I'll have to qualify all my responses, with all things being equal.

You might want to crack open your DOHC Honda motor and see if it has rockers?

SOHC or DOHC, they both have rockers to operate the valves. DOHC allows a greater degree of cam timing to come into play as the exhaust and intake are more independent of one another due to each having their own separate cam. hence greater efficiency and potential for tuning. however, hondas SOHC engines are still pretty decent.
seriously though this is the sort of stuff to research on yourself as there is sooo much info around, and not just from honda sources. its basic engine stuff

sorry.. i wasnt specific enough.. i just took it as.. twin cam motors.. where the cams are not "overhead"- when they are mounted on angles.. and that DOHC is mounted directly ontop.. well thats what i could remember when reading about it somewhere.. prob mad badd tho.. :D

all i can say is, the only benifit to sohc, in equal spec engines, is that it's easier to work on

sohc, at least with teh d-series is more fuel efficieient i beileve.

to give an idea of how fuel efficent the VTEC D series can be, i did a 220 km round trip from Melbourne to Torquay (& back) and used about 12L of 98 RON (5.45 L/100 Kms)...gotta be happy with that!
