quoted from the re001 thread:

^ I have been using re001 for a while both as daily tires and as track tires ranging from circuit, sprints, hill climbs and motokhanas.

In my opinion, they are a great tire to learn anything track related with as any loss of traction is very progressive and easy to control. Tread life is quite good and they are very very quiet.

Being a road tire, you dont have to worry about warming them up as with semis.

Having said that....

Recently I have started using the Kumho Ku36 and found that it was MILES ahead of what the re001s had to offer. Although they are much louder and offer not as good wet traction as the re001s, to simply put it, bang for buck is through the roof.

Tires were priced at 127$ each for 215/45/r16.

Going from the re001 to the ku36 at the last Barbagellos event, netted me about .3 secs off my pb consistantly, and this was after a good 3 month break from the event.

Cons for the Ku36 over the re001 however is the tread wear, admittedly having too high a tire pressure resulted in chunking, the wear rate of the ku36 vs the re001 is crazy.

To put it in perspective, almost a year of daily driving, numerous track days etc etc on the re001 still leaves me with approximately 40% tread left, where as one track event has probably killed off a good 2-3mm on the Kumhos.

All in all, Id probably stick with the re001 from now on as a daily and get more aquainted with the kumhos for track related events.

Just my 2 cents :)

the RE001 is not in the same class as the R1R and the KU36 :)
R1R and KU36 are both top of the class street tyres

^^^^can you offer any input as why?

Guessing because the RE001 is made to replace the S03 which was nowhere near as competitive as the RE01R. Now the RE11 is out to replace the RE01R.
And both the KU36 and R1R were made to compete inline with the RE11, along with other brands like the RT615, AD08 and Z1 Star Spec etc.. etc..

Here's a test they did
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=118

However if your looking at something more inline with the RE001 maybe try the T1R or the ku31

Yup i read that review, having said that all tests are subjective imo, Wheels or some magazine quoted pilot sports as winners, grass root motorsports suggested ku36 etc etc.

I was more wondering if he had tried the r1r and any input on those tires.

I base my opinion on which tyres WIN - reviews are a terrible source.

Just search up the r1r on tirerack they are like one of the biggest websites for tyres and do many extensive reviews.

By the way I don't know if this was mentioned but the RE001 will last longer then the other 2 tyres.

Lol well in that case could you give me pros and cons on the re11 and r1r assuming that you have tried both already?

seems like he cant elaborate on that statement... lol

Step 1) Find out where tyres like this are used in competition.
Step 2) Find out which tyres are running at the top.
Step 3) Profit.

The RE-11 are the stickiest street tyres in the 15" range at the moment. The last time I bought tyres, the winning [street] tyre in many USA AutoX competitions was it's younger brother, the RE-01R, so I imported a set. They didn't let me down. I was worried that they might not be too good on a road course where the heat cyles are far longer - I was comforted by the repeat appearance of these tyres on such tv shows as Best Motoring.

A littly pricey compared to say a toyo T1R but they are leagues ahead (I have owned these also). Wearing not too badly but expect at the absolute maximum, 25,000km of grandma driving.

When it comes to tyres, how are you supposed to interpret people's opinions of their tyres? When you read a review claiming "BEST TYRE EVER!!" or "UNBELIEVABLE GRIP" do you gain anything? The only way to find the true performance is to find relevant tests.

One test could quantitatively measure the skin-pan G's or stopping distances on the same tyres against other cars. Another test is to assume there is a collective intelligence in motor-sport competitors and that the winning tyre will emerge naturally.

I've not driven an R1R but have heard they are a bit floppy in the sidewall, but I think that's a toyo thing - based on many other opinions I've read, it seems they're a little worse than the Bridgestones in every catagory except for price. They look mean though, if that's your thing.

The best bang for your buck tyre is the Dunlop Z1 Star Spec - almost as good, much cheaper price.

My next set of [performance] tyres will be Toyo following the same rule - buy what wins.

I've used KU36 before, it did great at Winton but on the street in the mornings I would get understeer here and there particularly in the wet until the tyres were warm enough.
Basically they offer exceptional grip for the price (great value), but the cons are poor wet performance and quick wear rate. If you can live with the cons I'm sure you'll be happy with the KU36.

On the otherhand my mate uses R1Rs and swears by them, he says they are really grippy and never understeer but that might be because he doesn't push the car to the same limits as I do. R1Rs did last quite a while with him though so it's definitely more suited as a street tyre.

yea i have heard good feedback from wet weather performance of the r1r

does anyone know where its the cheapest place to get them from?

talk to your local tyre power dealer (if they exsist in syd) they are the authorised distributors for toyo in australia.

have driven on RE001 & have R1R's on my b18c1 eg, but havent driven on the ku36. RE001 not even worth it these days. they are overrated, overpriced & as vyets said, about to be discontinued.

all i am going to say is get a copy of the january edition of MOTOR and have a read of the tyre comparison they do. the R1R is voted BEST BANG FOR BUCK (tho they tested Dunlop SP Sport Maxx, Goodyear Eagle F1, Toyo T1 & R1R, Bridgestone RE001, Continental Supersport & Maxxis whatever it was called & there was not a single Kuhmo in the test)

personally, ever since putting the R1R's on my car & taking it for a squirt around the mountains many a time, i have to say they are the best street tyre i have ever driven on. HEAPS of cold grip, plenty of feedback from them & you will find your brakes give up before the tyres do under hard/extreme braking. the only couple of bad things i have found is when the road has puddles of still water & you go thru the puddle, you do aquaplane a little bit more than your standard sports radials & the second thing is the treadwear rating is a bit of a joke at 140 i think (when the RE001 have a treadwear rating of about 200 - 220)

exquisit

yea cheapest i got quoted is $190 which is more than i thought they would cost
tyrepower wanted nearly 20bux ontop of that!

treadwear ratings differ from manufacturers though
but how do they wear compared to adrenalins?

r1r would be more comparable to r11 i think but not sure on a price of them either

ok my experience with my set of ku36's 225/50/16 on 16x7 rims
in the dry they are great! especially driving through the mountains. when warmed up they are even better!
in the wet tho they tend to understeer a little until warm...once warm they grip alot more.
my biggest thing that has got me hating on these tyres is the treadwear rating 180.

sounds good

how do r1r compare to feddy 595-rsr?

the feddys seem to have a shallower groove and possibly softer compound but more importantly, they are roughly $50-60 a tyre cheaper
