View Full Version : So, it’s all in the tuning eh?

Truer words have never been spoken. After piss-farting around for 12 months with bad fuel economy, lumpy idle, poor part throttle response, total inability to come off and on throttle without huge amounts of jerkiness (which I think led to four busted engine mounts) -and let us not forget the endless excuses- I finally bit the bullet and paid DynoDave (Dave Flood) to tune my car. This was, far and away, the best couple of hundred dollars I’ve ever spent on my car. This is exactly how my car should have driven from the beginning. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the free tuning performed by a certain somebody here, but I’d much rather have paid the money up front and had the job done properly.

I think the little “come have your car tuned by the best” moniker should be transferred from a certain “tuner” –and I use the term loosely, to Dyno Dave.
The nuts and bolts of it is/are- peak power is the same, everything else is far, far better.

Anyway, that’s enough treading in toes for little old me today.
Dyno chart is ‘a coming.

Thumbs up to Dave for doing a great job ;-) Thats why he's one of my resellers and tuners.
Enjoy your newly tuned car.

yeah get it right from the begining as all that money you waist on unburnt fuel would have paid off for the tune in the 1st place.

plug plug "go Dave" plug :)

no - they can be tuned by anyone...

but obviously this is not really the best course of action is it?

are you sure? I thought tuning software was only available to dealers and tuners of the product.

but you usually are pretty good with facts so...

no, you still need the hardware to tune it, but i dont think you have to be Hondata 'dealer' to get this?

see: http://www.hondata.com/s200.html

it would probably help alot if you were though...

nah u dont, but why would u pay for all that gear to tune one unit? its beyond me if you did.

anyway, that makes me even more curious as to who tuned the unit on this particular car.

yeah - but that old thread was in February though dude...

just wondering how it goes from:

well, finally got everything running perfectly today!

peaked at 109.9 at dave's workshop, but the important thing is that now my car has excellent driveablity, response and a perfect idle.

my thanks to Dave Flood (DynoDave) and James (BLKCRX). they looked after me very well throughout the whole process. posted 15-02-2004, 07:14 PM

tuning is probably what will make your car run faster than someone elses if all the mods are the same....

can you see my confusement?

it's worth noting that when i created that thread -way back when- i had basically driven the car home only. it WAS substantially better than when i had driven the car to mt druitt, and i guess that plus a bit of the old placebo effect made me a happy camper.

some of the issues took a while to surface, like how the idle went really funny after driving the car hard for a period of time, how the car would get this burbling noise around 3.5k when the cruising on the motorway, why there was a really pronounced kick when passing 6k rpm and a few other little things like poorer fuel economy.

another issue arose after a little performance benchmarking involving a certain vti-r and the fact that i could barely pull away (the cars had the same mods minus the hondata, the other car was on 17's btw.) i basically put that down to the fact that my car had about 70k km more on the clock than the other one.

this time i did a little benchmarking involving a certain black vti-r that shall remain nameless (you know who you are :)), the result was much more satisfactory. i went from being a car length ahead in 3rd gear and not pulling away, to several car lengths ahead and pulling away nicely. the only notable difference being that my car had been tuned...

does that put any doubts to rest?

had no 'doubts', just needed some more backgound to reduce confusement...

i understand now :)
