1) When I'm redline it on gear 1 then I try to change to gear 2, how come it's hard to pull to gear 2? Is there something wrong with the clutch? How can I find out if there something wrong with it, and when I'm at high speeds I change gear and I change gear you feel the car dump abit.

2) Is smell coming from the exhaust a bad thing? Think it smells like burning petrol but I dunno.

1) possibly synchro's are worn out.
2) that smell is probably the synchro's.

you need to relax with driving it hard.

So if synchros worn out, what do I need to do? Change to whole clutch?

are you shifting slowly or slamming into gear?

fuel smell at high rpm is pretty normal
my real question is how can you drive AND smell whats coming out of the exhausts at the same time? :p

synchros arent in the clutch...theyre in the gearbox.
synchros make sure 2 gears are able to mesh before they try to

Oh, how much do you think it is to change the synchros?

When driving normally from gear 1 to 2 isn't that hard to get into, it's when I launch my car in gear 1 and then try put it in 2, I have to give it a hard pull but going from 2 to 3 is alright.

don't have a short shifter do you?

syncros is generally an expensive exorcise ... gearbox has to be pulled apart etc

i would so dont slam it when driving 'hard' ... u can drive 'hard' and still treat your car with respect

Have an EG si, is it just me or is it abit hard to pull from 1 to 2 (feels like I have to give it 2 pulls), but 2 to 3 and 3 to 4 is easy. Anyone else have this problem?

How do I check if the synchro is ****ed?

before u change ur synchro.. try changin your gearbox oil... see if the helps.. cheaper alternative

Urgh ... he's changing gears up, not down.
Granny shifting FTW, no double clutching like vin diesel :P

Okay been driving my car more it more ways to find out the problem.

At slow rpms (2000-4000) gear 1 to 2 shifts alright.

But at high rpms (6000 - redline) gear 1 to 2 it shifts hard, like I have to give it a real pull. Like it feels like it get stuck on neutral something like that.

Hope this can help to you guys solving my problem, ta!

probably just because theres more load on the gears at higher rpm's
makes it harder for the selector fork to do it's job

so know crunching noises at all ?

I suspect you may be trying to make the shift too quickly and as a result when you try to engage 2nd the engine rpm is still too high, i.e. when the 'dog teeth' try to engage with each other there is too high a rotational speed difference between the rotating parts trying to engage with each other. It sounds like the synchromesh is actually working properly to prevent the gears crunching by resisting the dog teeth engagement until the rotational speeds become more closely matched (this will be happening 'naturally' due to the engine rpm falling, and as a result of the friction created by the synchromesh cones).

The shift from 1st to 2nd is not unlikely to need to be slower than the shift from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th or 4th to 5th because the difference in gear ratio is probably greater between 1st and 2nd than it is between any of the other gears. A lighter flywheel would probably speed up the shift substantially, as would a gearbox where the 1st and 2nd speed ratios are not so widely spaced.

With some cars (e.g. my CB7 Accord) the IACV acts to (in effect) briefly hold the 'throttle' slightly open after the driver has lifted off the throttle pedal (it's actually the IACV briefly opening up on the overun). My understanding is that this is an emission control measure, but it really messes with 'drivability' of the engine because it causes the engine rpm to not drop quickly enough when shifting from a lower to a higher gear. This could also be part of your problem(?).

The easiest way to prevent the IACV behaving in this irritating manner is to insert a shim plate between the IACV and the plenum to prevent air from flowing through the IACV, however this also prevents the idle rpm from automatically adjusting when auxilliary loads (AC, PAS, electrical loads) are placed on the engine. Personally I think this is a small price to pay for the improved engine behaviour that can come from disabling the IACV.

is there still a smell or is that an unrelated problem?

The smell is coming from the exhaust, friend said it was greyish blackish smoke? Is that just the oil burning?

- Also took it for a spin today, gear 1, I was launching it but something odd happend, I didn't completely stepped accell all the way down to the floor but car was taking off it was going 30km/h or 40km/h then the rpm kept going up but the speed didn't go up just felt like the RPM was just going up. Then I was like is my engine stuffed.

So I tried again with my foot all the way down on gear 1 and it was getting speed and RPM went up. What's the problem? :S

your engine and gearbox is clonking up?

Hahaha dude your clutch is buggered, cos your clutch is rooted, theres no more meat on the clutch to engage the gears properly.

i mean, there might be some shit things going on between them. You should get it checked up properly with a mechanic.
