View Full Version : Have you lowered your car? like or regret?
I have only owned lowered cars with the exception of this civic eg. they were all lowered before hand, i never lowered any of them. rides always been stiff and bad. - things like unknown time it has been lowered, dont know how long shocks have been bad, etc.
stock. i like the comfort but lately im wondering about lowering.
who here has lowered there own cars and do you like or regret it? mainly civic eg owners...
is it bad? or is it ok to deal with?
plus how low and did you get shockies as well? thanks

Good springs + good shocks can be comfortable too :)
I'm currently on vision coilovers but I'm thinking of removing them due to Sydney roads being so bad, the car bounces everywhere!
I love driving my stock ED over my EG LOL, if you don't care how the height looks, I would say to leave it standard! Nothing beats the comfort of standard springs and nice shocks :D

I lowered mine by 1 inch using Tein Flex. Much too bumpy on Sydney streets. Rode in someone elses car with good spring/shock combo which cost about the same as a set of Tein SS, and I have to say that it gave the lowering, handling and comfort all in a good package. Of course, my Tein Flex handles slightly better but that is only useful when I am on Wakefield. A good spring and shock combo will meet the needs on the street.

^ is there such thing as a height adjustable spring+shock combo?

The lower you go, the less suspension travel you have and thus you need stiffer springs:- the enemy of comfort.
I am lowered on relatively stiff 'coilovers' and don't regret it at all. I'm not interested in comfort in the slightest. I'm happy to tolerate the ride discomfort for increased safety, control and pleasure.

Some shocks have adjustable spring perches. Those would be the ones to go for if you wanted some adjustability. Then again, you only need to set the height once and leave it as is. If I was to do it all over again, I would go for a particular spring and shock combo (eibach/bilstein) which doesn't have height adjustability. As long as the height is what I want, I don't need adjustability.

what you also need to remember is that your car is getting on in it's years... even if you dont lower it, a set of new shocks will help with control and comfort remarkably...
Like Aaronn said above, a set of well matched shockes and spring will ensure a smooth ride with control without bouncing around like a Gemini

Okay so reading this thread, along with other threads I'm starting to get confused. Can someone clarify if what I'm about to type is correct...
Soft springs + shock combo will give the car a bumpy ride. Where as stiffer springs + shock combo will give the car a firmer/comfortable ride. I just need clarification on this thanks.

mine is lowered on skunk2 pro c coilovers. Its a bits rough on brisbane roads but its easy enough to change the height or dampening whenever i want to.
I was in the same situation before.
I had the option to go for either Tien SS coilovers OR an eibach/koni FSD setup.
Since im spending majority of the time on the streets and comfort was one thing due to other family members using the car, i went for the spring/shock setup. Provided me with a nice ride height with improved handing... Sure i cant dump the car.. but in sydney, why would i.. roads around here are BAD

cant be bother making a new thread and since we're talking about the spring/shock combo topic.
Was wondering whats a good spring/shock combo? i'm thinking of heading towards the Koni/Ground Control Combo with custom spring rates and have heard many good things about it. Does anyone have them in their car and what spring rates are you rocking for street with a drop? I'm on 195/55/15 profile and want a 1 finger gap front and 2 finger gap rear.
Post your shock/spring combo, spring rates, wheel profile and finger gap between fender and wheel (and a picture if u could be bothered).
Much appreciated

Soft springs + shock combo will give you more comfortable ride, but the ride will have a floating feeling on high speed... the driver feel less to the road.
Stiffer springs + shock combo will gives you more firmer ride. You will feel every rough surface of the street.. in turn it gives more feeling to the road.

I've been wondering how koni FSD feels like. How much does it set you back?
It is not so adjustable compare to tein ss, but FSD is the top of the line of koni's product. I'll go with koni anytime.

Top of their street damper line maybe, but it will have nothing on their more serious dampers.

Hmmm... i guess the best answer for the main Q's on the thread is.
You'll regret it! (if you just changed springs) Sacrificing comfortability over looks
You won't regret. If you have a dosh to spend on the right set-up and quality parts.

Totally agree with above sentiments. I lowered my previous car (Magna) and the ride quality was shocking. Every largish pothole would be hugely uncomfortable for both myself and the car's occupants. Looked amazing though! haha It is all about the looks in the end, right?
With coilovers (or airbag suspension) I guess you get the best of both worlds!

I'm lowered on Zeal coilovers with spring rates front 12kg/mm, and rear 10kg/mm, and I love them. They are firm, but the shock has so much stroke that it's comfortable.
You can't say awww coilovers suck cos they are too firm. Each coilover is different. Stock DC2R was awesome compromise, but there was to high and too much roll. Koni / Eibach springs - hated them, and they blew up on me. BuddyClub's RSD had the similar spring rates to what I have now, but rear was 2kg/mm softer than the Zeals - yet is was stiffer and really horrible. The Zeals springs are alot shorter than the Buddyclubs, and the shock has more stroke. Each system is different...
well i didnt know you could get soft option lowered springs,
i had teins on my old silvia with 17inch rims and low pro, i found that hard to deal with on bumpy surfaces...ok so it boils down to the right combination, but damn how do i even find out whats acceptable? *shrugs* kinda retracted from this idea for now...
thanks for the replies though :)

Don't lower if you don't want to scrape your car. My whole undercarriage is scraped out even when lowered by only 1 inch!

Not that good. A bit better than chopped springs, but still not road legal in Aus.

Not sure why they are so cheap. Probably cheap crappy springs made of cheap steel with inconsistent spring rates.

I wouldn't get cheap imports from ebay.
1: You don't have any warranty even though they say they do (Takes ages to be refunded plus you have to cover the cost of P&H again)
2: Now adays it's hard to trust the item itself as there are imitations or fake parts.
Don't gamble your safety, if you have the money I guess buy it from the shop they sometimes the shops offer you discounts buying few items, or occassionally the items are on sale.

My boyfriend installs springs/coilovers for people at home on weekends. It's hillarious because the owners ALWAYS want them as low as possible... so he installs them like that. But then, they all have the worst time coming out of his driveway... but still are so xcited by how cool the car looks...
By Wednesday tha week, he's getting calls/sms's from those exact people wanting to come in again and raise them because they can't drive! haha.
He feels bad for them and doesn't charge them the second time. lol

Comfortable,so nice.
I'm buying the KYB gas that are on here for $400 to replace the old 120,000km stock ones.I think I will stick with the king springs or maybe buy some whiteline ones off Gary if I'm wanting to lower and stiffen it up more.Which I just may.
A spring/shock combo is me.Unless you spend $2.5-$3k on coils,I dont reckon you will get the comfort of a spring/shock combo. And I haven't got $1200 to find out so just to replace my old shocks,I will be happy!
