Another year has ended has gone by in the NSW Supersprints season, and we are glad to officially announce that our civic has take out Class 3B. I would like to take time in this thread to summarize the entire season and thank our sponsors and supporters throughout the year.

Coming runner up last year with an underpowered B16a engine, we needed to step up the game this year with our fellow competitors to level up the playing field. So during the off season, the team sat down and had a chat with the direction of the car for the 2009 season. The verdict was a move to a B20Vtec power plant. With a new developed head and engine combo, it looked like a promising year after a good first dynoed session back in January. For more info on the engine package, check out this thread http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=118139 (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=118139). This little 4 cylinder revs to 9200-9400rpm on the dyno and makes 150-160kw depending on day and tire combo. The team was amaze with its rev-ability and has certainly proved that if an engine is built right, it can both be reliable and perform at its best. But its not only the motor, other aspects plays an important aspect to the entire performance of the engine. Thanks to Scott @ Insight Motorsport we installed a VIPEC V44 plug and play ECU into the civic to control the B20vtec. With the use of E85, the car consistently made 155-160kw at the wheels.

To keep things short, here is a summary of the 2009 Season

Round 1 - Oran Park GP – 1:19.5 1st in Class 3B – Set New Class and Type Record previous record set by e240 Toda Civic 1:21.18 2008

Round 2 - Oran Park GP – 1:21.2 2nd in Class 3B – (Suspension issues)

Round 3 - Wakefield Park – 1:07.89 1st in Class 3B – Set New Class and Type Record previous record set by e240 Toda Civic 1:09.45 2008

Round 4 – Eastern Creek – 1:47.58 1st in Class 3B – Set New Class and Type Record previous record set by e240 Toda Civic 1:51.84 2008

Round 5 - Wakefield Park - 1:06.35 1st in Class 3B – Reset Class and Type Record again!

Round 6 - Oran Park GP – 1:18.3 1st in Class 3B – Reset Class and Type Record again!

Round 7 - Eastern Creek – 1:46.1 1st in Class 3B – Reset Class and Type Record again!

Round 8 - Oran Park GP – 1:20.1 1st in Class 3B – Clutch let go after 2 runs

Round 9 - Oran Park South – Did not take part

As you can from the list, we took out 7 of the 9 events this year. We have set records at 3 different tracks in NSW in the Class and Type Records. Overall the team is very ecstatic and pleased with the result from every round. Small improvements made to the car throughout the season with careful selection of parts and aerodynamic research has certainly paid off especially from Round 5,6 & 7.

The Team & Sponsors
Big Thanks to the BYP support crew at every event who has both help and support what we are doing

Props and Thanks to Dave for the freaky B20vtec engine package and all those tuning session. We’ll been through a lot this year at the very start with those late night doing R&D on this poor little B20vtec.

Thanks to Scott at Insight Motorsport for the set-up and tune of the Vipec V44. Scott is really switch on when it comes to E85 and Vipec. Highly recommended for any tune work!

Thanks to Jeff at Special Project Motors for coming aboard the team with a sponsorship for Hardrace and GEAR-X products

The Future
We are setting new and higher goals for next year. It might not see the car in the same respected Class (3B), but we want to show how quick a Honda can be around the track. The car will be more focused on Time Attack Events and Superlap 2010! The car will be redeveloped during this off-season for one last time at Oran Park GP before it closes

Here are some pics from this season

Congratulations, takes a lot of effort to achieve those lap times.
Would you consider IPRA for 2010? We could do with another Honda in under 2Litres class!!!
With the way that the class is shapping up for next year, it will be the premier racing class for Honda's throughout Australia.

Thanks Greg!

At this stage, we are not interested in IPRA. In a couple more years time when there is more Honda's in the category, we'll seriously consider building a IPRA car :)

There will be at least 12 Hondas in under 2Litre next year and 2 in over 2Litre.
So a pretty strong representation by Honda.
The 2 over 2litre cars should be interesting, taking on the V8's and the Mazda's...... one inparticular will have serious K power and a very well developed chassis.
Have a think about it..... It would be great to have another Civic in the bunch.

hey benson, seeing ur really making a mark for yourself, any chance you can writeup a newbie recommendation for the tracks you've run? No need for any trade secrets, just little details like what you should look out for on certain tracks and any general setup tips?

Good to hear a strong field of Honda's for next year Championship. I'll definately head out for a peek next year. Havent been to an IPRA round yet

Limbo: When i get the chance, i'll do a write up for Eastern Creek and Wakefield. Oran Park is closing, so there is no point putting a guide up for OP. Maybe PM me some specific things you want me to include in the thread

4 Integra's.... 3 DC2's and a DC5 (still a bit of a maybe)
8 Civics... Most with B power but at least 2 should have K's on board.
It's going to be "formula Honda":)

Gee that seems to be a bit of a dramatic turn around for 3J in NSW....

Thought it was tough getting 12 U2L cars on the grid let alone 12 hondas.....

Can you use spherical bearings in this class or just polyurethane? (I can't read the rules, the stupid cams site has a popup that I can't figure out how to close...)

SPEEDCORE
23-10-2009, 04:12 PM
No sphericals.... all bushings must be elastometric.

Don't quote me cause its been a couple years since going through the 3J rules.... but I think there is also an issue with not allowing adjustable control arms.... which could raise an an issue for most 90's civics/tegs with the wishbone setup.

Yeah to my understanding poly or rubber. Must run standard suspension arms, which i reckon is useless!

Round 1: Eastern Creek. 29 entries.
Round 2: Wakefield park. 35 entries.
Round 3: Oran Park GP. 43 entries.
Round 4: Eastern Creek. 36 entries.
Round 5: Wakefield park. 38 entries.

I think IPRA 3J is very strongly supported... Those are impressive grid numbers.
The reason for the boom next year in Honda race cars is ... People have realized that they are quick/ reliable/ cheap/ and easy to maintain. = Bags of fun!

I'm not sure where you hear this sort of stuff from, but there is very little contact between competitors in 3J at all..... as a matter of fact I'd bet your Civic had more damage last season from the sprint rounds than my EK9 does from 6 rounds of IPRA racing!
If you ever have a change of heart... I'd be happy to help with the transition and any questions you might have regarding getting started in IPRA.

Cheers Greg..

Were they combined grid numbers Greg?

I think if you look over the competitor numbers for the last, say, five years then you will see a real decline in numbers. IPRA has traditionally been strong and consistent in competitors but a large proportion of the field has disappeared even since 2006 when I competed. New competitors have not, in the whole, appeared to take up the numbers. So where are all those guys who competed 4-5 years ago? Has the economic uncertainty of the last few years forced people to re-evaluate their participation? There must be a lot of cars sitting in garages!

As for the panel damage, I think that only happens at the front, where sheep-stations are at stake! ;)

Peter, yes they are combined #'s.
This year the % has been in favour of U2L by around 60% to 40% for the overs.
IPRA is the strongest of all the State based categories. As an example...Last round at Wakefield park Sports sedans had 4 entries!
I think I have dragged this thread far enough off topic.... so I will leave it at that.;)

Cheers Greg..

Greg,

Im sure if everything is right (financially wise), we'll build an IPRA car in another chasis in the next upcoming years.

The only damage to the civic was the off @ Oran Park. That was my fault, push it a little to hard on the ripple strips with a greasy grass sent me to the wall. That's motorsports for you. We lost a few front splitters over the rounds, but hey if you dont lose one, your not pushing hard enough :p

I would like to see a few amendants to the rules. Some of the 3J rules are just ridculous.. PM sent

Benson the only way rules will get changed is if you join IPRA NSW Club and get involved then you have a say you dont need to race in the class yet just be involved in IPRA, if you sit back and complain on forum sites nothing will happen, the club/class needs young people like yourself and your brother with a passion for racing. You have had a good year and no one can take that away from you or your team

Last round at Wakefield park Sports sedans had 4 entries!

 I was in Sports Sedans for quite a few years (inc. administration) before my one year in IPRA. I believe internal factions and politics generally killed Sports Sedans. I could write a book on all the cr@p that went on there - IPRA hasn't been affected yet because the majority of competitors don't care about the politics enough to get involved; they just want to race! But when they do I could forsee a similar scenario. I hope it doesn't happen because it is the best class for grassroots motorsport in NSW. IPRA meetings are tame affairs compared to the SS meetings I attended over the years. I'll leave it there too before I say something I might regret.
