hi guys,
i'm new to this forum, just bought a intergra type s, and when purchased a new car i decided to test the potiental of the car, therefore being a newb a accidently mishift to 3 when i was in 4th and i the rev line hit maxium 9000 rpm for 1 second when i relized and slow down immediately and heared a pssshh sound.
I'm wondering would have i broke something in the process and how bad is it for the engine? can the type s engine withstand that pressure on a rare basis?
feedback would be greatly appreciated
thankyou

hey man.. the car has a cut off, and will cut off fuel back to when the neeedle hits around 4K so dw... i've mis-shifted before after 8100 rpm (thats when it cuts off fuel).. no dramas

aslong as it doesnt bypass the revlimiter. as some times you will have to much speed and the revs will go past the stock rev limit

you are mistaking over-revving from acceleration with over-revving due to mis-shifting.
they are NOT the same thing.
if you simply stay in a particular gear until the engine reaches redline, the fuel cutout will prevent the engine speed from becoming too high.
IF however, you select the wrong gear (eg 3rd instead of 5th) the road speed, when matched to the engine speed through the clutch, will cause it to exceed this maximum rpm - it cannot be cured by the fuel cutoff because the road speed is providing the momentum

On a down shift the engine can and will rev beyond the redline/cut off.
This can potentially detonate the engine.

the rev limiter only works when you are accelerating. if you already have high revs and shift down u mechanically rev the engine past the rev limiter, which is what happened in your case. your engine should be fine if its just this once.

odds are you probably didnt do much or any damage if it was just one second but what rev were you at when u shifted that might help answer the question a bit better

A better question to ask would be what speed were you going?
As mentioned earlier, the momentum previously created is what is spinning the engine. Speed of the car would give you a better indication as to what revs he would have hit on the down shift. If only you had some sort of data-logging device fitted you could check where the needle was sitting and go from the to be 100% sure. If the car feels the same to drive, there are no knocks or weird noises coming from anywhere they shouldn't be coming from, then you should be ok.

A timely reminder that even pros make mistakes and you need to be careful with your pride and joy, or 5 seconds of fun could cost you your car.

to the OP: does your car still feel normal when you drive? if so it's probably fine
i think overspeeding the engine mechanically with the gearbox like you did will probably cause (in order of severity depending on how fast the engine ended up spinning): valve float (no problem), valves hitting pistons (bad, you will know next time you try and drive it), catastrophic failure of another internal engine part (very bad, you will know straight away by the piston sticking out of the bonnet :))

not exactly sure, it happened so fast, estimate around 100 - 110 i was going at.
another question i'm hearing a whistling noise at gear 3, 4, 5 around 3000rpm. should i be concerned? i'm not sure about the car as i just bought it and still discovering new things about it.
thanks for all the replys, it has broadened my horizens about the car.

subtle whistling can be a side-effect of an aftermarket pod filter or CAI. Do you have one?

No, the car is completely stock.. i'm getting real pnoid as this is my first proper car and u know how it is, dont want to wreck it. the two days i have owned it i have kicked it resonablely hard maybe hitting gear at 6 - 7000 rpm.
Might of been a mistake.:S

i wouldn't be too worried. I'd put the whistling down to intake. Unless it is more of a hissing noise, then you should look into it a bit more

i remember mis-shifting harsh once in my dc2 and destroying my rear engine mount. felt like i'd hit something :) crazy experiences like these teach us good lessons.

a lot of people had been saying about the 'infamous' whistling sound, and mine does that too !! Well i dont really care about it now.... since i got an open pod filter and full intake-header-exhaust, so that might contribute to the noise....;)
