View Full Version : Maximising DC5 Potentials

Hi guys.
Ive just read a thread saying the DC5 takes a bit of skill to drive. Being new to the V-tec family, I just had a couple of questions. First of all, when should i start shifting gears from start to finish if im trying to maximise the power boost from the vtec? Secondly, how do i know when the v-tec has kicked in? Also, how would i drive the car altogether to get the fastest time possible? Finally, the v-tec doesnt kick in till high revs, would this not be detrimental to the engine and would u not risk the chance of even blowing your engine if rev'd for too long?

Have you got a R, S or base (auto or manual)?

Once you answer this we'll answer all your questions.

+1. Knowing which model DC5 you have would help.

Generally though you'd want to shift at redline so that vtecs still engaged when you shift to the next gear.
Vtec engages at 5,800rpm on a DC5S.
Should be similar for DC5R, not sure about base models though.
And you should be able to hear it.

When should I start shifting gears from start to finish if im trying to maximise the power boost from the vtec?

Even with the stock air box you can hear the change over point... but it should be around the 5800RPM. Fuel cut off is set to 7800 (Even tho it looks like 8000 on the tacho). So if you shift at the right time (As close to 7800 as possible), you should be able to shift into the next gear and still be in VTEC. Also avoid using such terms as "VTEC power boost", or "VTEC kicking in". "VTEC engaging" is a good way to not make people with other car brands pick on you.

How do I know when the VTEC has kicked in?

You should clearly be able to hear the engine tone change. Even with the stock air box it's a noticeable change. You should also feel a noticeable change in the engine power.

How would I drive the car altogether to get the fastest time possible?

Fastest possible time in what? From your house to the shop?

The v-tec doesnt kick in till high revs, would this not be detrimental to the engine and would u not risk the chance of even blowing your engine if rev'd for too long?

Simply put, no. If the engine is maintained regularly (I change my oil ever 5000km), and you let it heat up properly (Only reving it to 3000RPM for the first 10-15 min of driving) it'll be fine. If you look after the car, the car well look after you.

Just drive the car and get use to it. Going by this thread, you sound as though you are a P-Plater (Question 3 was the biggest give away) Basically, never do anything you are uncomfortable about, and always drive within your limits (This should be with every car you drive). But just like every FWD car you drive, you have to be smooth with it. If your half way through a corner you can't just suddenly change the momentum of the car (IE rapidly take your foot of the accelerator, or apply the brake).

u mad?

Don't rapidly take your foot off the accelerator

+1 on that
Still got mine Thank **** for that event, lucky i didnt hit anything.

+1 on the person who wrote the large amount of information above.
ALWAYS drive within your limits with these cars or you will be sending your car to the panel shop very quickly my friend.
I generally let my car warm up for about 5 mins or until the heating of the car remains stable just under half way before pushing into VTEC,
IMO do not push your car into VTEC when it's cold >.>, Learn't that when i first got the car, BIG MISTAKE, the car basically is going to tell you get out and don't drive me anymore.

BTW when you push into VTEC you can tell very easily, just listen and you can notice it by your car revvin Faster but can slightly feel the push of the car. Don't mis-shift either (Bad thing for the car)

#1 Service it on time
#2 Let her warm up
#3 Then VTEC =)

You should still wait a couple more min after the temp gauge has been sitting at normal operating temps, as that gauge is for the water... oil still isn't at optimum temps.

Sorry if it seems like I'm correcting you in every thread (This is the 3rd one), but sitting on forums is just more interesting then study :p

personally.. i like a clean look.... so i wouldnt even think of having them there. i think all the gauges in the cluster are great enough! imo, gauges are jsut race bling.... especailly for na street cars.

Fair call, but i really want the fact that i know my oil temp n pressure.
So i might get the mounted against the panel inside on the right of the driver how it forms the chasis if you get me..

You mean on the A-Pillar?

What about getting the Greddy Infometer. I think you can make it display pressure/temp. And installation would be alot easier - its plug n play.

Here's a link to Greddy for the informeter. Its just plug & play into OBD2 port in drivers side footwell.

Alternatively, heres a picture from a Nissan Silvia S15 of their A-Pillar Boost Gauge. You can put multiple gauges on the A-Pillar but too many wouldn't look too good IMO.

Nah dislike that first one.
Personal thought though..
Two gauges on the A-Pillar isn't to bad, i've seen it on my mates DC2R so yeah..

Yeah gauges on the A-Pillar will look hot as long as there's not too many.
Which ones you going for btw? Defi or Mugen?
Let us know how it goes and post pics once you've done them.
