Aim:

To Mount the GPS because mounting the GPS on ya front window is Dangerous!

Required:

A piece of paper and a pen
A Texta
Some Perspex
Drill and 2 or 3 small drill bits
4 screws
A File

Steps:

Since the GPS has a suction mount,we will need to use Perspex:

Find a suitable location to mount the GPS and make up a template from which you will use to trace and cut the perspex:

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l287/beeza2/100_1459.jpg

Make sure the GPS will fit on there:

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l287/beeza2/100_1431.jpg

Bunnings sell perspex for $30 a sheet (gotta buy the whole sheet).I used 3mm thick perspex.Trace and cut with a hacksaw:

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l287/beeza2/100_1471.jpg

Simply use a file to round the edges off and use a texta to mark the best spots for the screws:

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l287/beeza2/100_1461.jpg

Check it will fit again:

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l287/beeza2/100_1458.jpg

Drill em' out,use a small drill bit to start,to prevent the perspex from splitting, then finish up with a drill bit just a touch smaller than the screws so the screw just bite's and grabs the perspex a touch:

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l287/beeza2/100_1492.jpg

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l287/beeza2/100_1462.jpg

Next we're gonna drill into where wires maybe so remove the backup fuse. You can just disconnect the negative battery cable instead. Also make sure you turn the alarm off if you have one or it will start wailing!:

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l287/beeza2/100_1464.jpg

Use a small drill bit again and work up to one just a bit smaller then the screw:

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l287/beeza2/100_1466.jpg

Done!

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l287/beeza2/100_1495.jpg

Dont mind the door trims, just painting em':

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l287/beeza2/100_1493.jpg

Perfect.Removing CD's? No problem!

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l287/beeza2/100_1516.jpg

Make sure you Reset the ECU (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=67113) afterwards if you removed the back up fuse or the negative cable on the battery.

Other comments:

atm I'm using the power cord that plugs into the cigarette lighter,it's messy and ugly.I will wire the power cord up to a power source and post the results.

I'm Lovin' it! hehehe

i think those screws seem a bit chunky and could try and blend in a bit more. other than that, top job!

Thanks Lukey.

The original idea was to to use countersunk screws that will sit flush with the perspex, but the perspex is only 3mm (that size I feel suits best),not enough room to countersink.

I choose these screws for the 'mechanical/machine' type look and I really dig it.

No need, they are already black YO!

Yup,they are dangerous as.

You shouldn't be playing with electronic devices when driving...

Do it at a set of lights or stop the car.

Soooo many accidents happen when people 'take thier eyes off the road to - WHATEVER'

I do 'glance' at the GPS when driving - IF NEEDED,which isn't often. You DO NOT need to look at it much at all.I use it to get me somewhere,IT IS NOT A TOY TO PLAY WITH WHEN DRIVING!!

PLAY WITH IT AT HOME.

Thanks Doc! :D

This is another option. http://www.holdmyphone.com.au/

They sell clips specific to car models so that you don't have to drill into your dash. Then you can mount whatever you want to them.

Good DIY though.

How about getting some material that looks like the same colour as the dash and wrap it around the perspect, give it a more (oem) look :)

Nice DIY.

Thanks Hisoka!

I'm just using that cheap 'export' paint you can buy at crazy clarks, bunnings etc, does the job well.

This way I can whip the trims off at the track and cable tie the electric window control to the door, easy as!

maybe an idea for this diy, you could possibly get something to make the clock brighter, and tint the perspecs?

could possibly make it blend in more?

beeza

You could probably change the light bulb for the clock to make it brighter?

I don't feel it's out of place,I feel it blends well.

You could do something to make it blend more if you like forsure though, like colour the outer edge or tint it forsure!

That carbon wrap discusssed on the DIY section would be great to cover the perspex. Would give it an OEM look, not many people would notice it and/or complain about it if you go to sell your car one day
Just a thought
Great work once again Mr. Beeza

That's a great idea mate,so as long as the GPS will still suction to it,which it should, good thinkin' mate!

You can buy like a smokey black perspex which is basically just a light black in colour but still clear, although you would probably have to go to a plastics specalist/factory to buy some
