hi i have just rebuild a b18a1 ls integra motor and it is blowing alot of white, blue, grey ish smoke now it smells like oil and does not dissapate quickley so i know it is not coolant.....

the motor was hoaned and standard size pistons were ut in with chrome alloy rings now apparantly blowing smoke is common after a rebuild due to the chrome rings being very hard the car has 200km on it when should the smoke stop or is there a deeper issue

who rebuilt ? You or a professional mechanic ?

if you used OEM spec pistons and the cylinders have only been honed and not properly checked - the cylinder wall/s maybe ovaled ( this is the end result of sideways moving piston over time in a alloy block) So you are lacking compression and massive blowby

Or what oil are you using ? You should be using a mineral oil to begin

yes i rebuilt it with a mate who owns a garage but has never built anyhing with chrome rings... the bores appear to be round when mesured.....

let me guess, you let it idle for a while before you started to break it in??? and you used a synthetic oil???

sounds like blow by to me!cylinders have been over-bored, and rings are not inbeded in walls.

yea idled for 2 or 3 min, but na used 10w 30 4 first 100k now on 15w40 and was told by castrol that there 10w 30 was mineral but dunno

Is your piston to cylinder wall clearance within tolerances? What about the ring end gaps?

I don't know what chrome rings are, but I personally wouldn't put anything but OEM in, and would follow the service manual to the letter.

Chrome rings are known for this, even after being run in "correctly". Sounds like you glazed your bores.

There is too many variables to address here;

Too much fuel can cause glazing
Incorrect oil
Wrong end gaps
Bad batch of rings
Not enough load on run in
etc

i have been told by my freind that rebuilds engines that you shouldnt let it idle after rebuilding it.....or that can happen and the rings dont bed into the bore...

yep, as soon as its started you want to be giving it a bit of load, the first ten mins is the most important part of the break in imo... even with new bearings I let it idle as little as i can...

all the gaps are within tolerances and if the bores are glazed that means it time to pull down again or is there a way to reserect the motor if not for a short time as i can use it to put the new ecu in and get everythin else setup b4 geting the motor right

hey man i had same problem after my rebuild, turned out the cylinders were not fully round, first time we measured it a little and it seemed it was fine, but no, so yeh had to rebuild again bored out and larger pistons.

as above,

you really need to ensure you have the correct piston to bore clearance. your bores are within spec and Ring endgap, ring land clearance, also the position of the ring endgaps on the piston when the pistons are installed.

a nice runin oil and a good drive up a hill in high gear to load up the engine.
if a Hill is to far away load it up in 5th gear at low speeds
