honda reliablility

recently got myself a 1990 sir ef8 cars been running fine till the other day it decides to throw a main bearing and **** bottom end of my engine beyond repair. i had brought the ef8 as my ed6 had completley shat itself was blowing smoke like a chimney.. (worn piston rings and stem seals) then eventualy blew the head gasket. am i just realy unlucky or what? by the way both cars healthy on purchase yet did not live to see there first service....ive always believed honda had good strong engines above anything else. not to mention they make them for just about everything not just cars. im to a point now where i need to replace both engines for the cars before i can do anything with them is there any point dropping new engines in or will they shit themselves to?

how many ks on the car ?

I think hondas are more reliable than most if not all other cars out there , for their age.
Compare similar cars of the age...the closest would be a toyota camry.

I think youve just had some bad luck mate, you're right, Honda is diversified in terms of its manufacturing of engines for different products, and they are one of, if not the biggest engine manufacturer in the world.

But they're build to pretty specific tolerances, and as such require their routine maintenance... like any other machine...

If theyre well looked after they will last a long time... if they aren't, they won't unfortunately... (but thats with anything really) that's the difficulty with buying a second hand car you can never really tell... Honda's are very sensitive to their oil... always make sure you have the right oil, and change it regularly...

anyone done a full rebuild on b16a ruff idea of cost and if its worth buying a second hand one or doing rebuild?

That's the risk of buying a used car. You don't know how the previous owner treated it. Not only for 250k and 270k engines. I've seen 2004 models (which puts it to 60-80k in 2007 when I saw this happen) blow smoke and burn oil like crazy because the owner just starts the engine in the morning and then rev away hard immediately.

correct. also it's worth pointing out that 250/270k is actually quite a long way, all engines will be getting a bit long in the tooth by that time.

Hondas are pretty good, up there with the best of the Japs. and keep in mind almost all Japanese cars, in turn, have superior reliability and longevity over Euros/Aussies

it's feasible for a Honda motor to run reliability and within most tolerances at those kms, but it is very much dependant on how they are treated...

In terms of a rebuild, whilst i cant advise on cost, i'd probably be pretty sure it would be more than buying a second hand engine...

If you are going to keep the car (or the engine for that matter) for a reasonable period of time, then a rebuild will be worth it...

my 95 dc4 just clocked over 265k and is still going strong. i change oil every 5k and take it to mechanic every 2nd 5k to do oil + filter (as i cant get it lol) + whatever else needs doing

my family and I have owned Hondas since 1992 now. We have never ever had any major problems with our hondas, all they cost us is batteries, oil, timing belt etc etc which is all just general maintenance. It comes down to spending the money and regularly servicing the car. If you dont do this you are more than likely going to pay the price in the long run.

honda motors last over but need their reg maintance.
they tend to die early if abused without maintance

Hondas generally come up near the top of the JD Power reliability surveys in the USA, so they are pretty reliable. If you are after unreliability, I seem to remember a colleague's work vehicle (a Nissan) in the 1980's which required an exchange engine at 4000 km! As far as I remember, he hadn't been thrashing it, although he was a stock car racer in his spare time. Luckily Nissan replaced the engine under warranty - it was burning a heap of oil.

thanks again for reply's sorry if my first post seem'd negative towards honda, just had some bad luck i spose, thinking i'll probably drop another d15b4 block into the civic for now. use it as a run around and save for a b18c7 engine conversion into the ef8.? figure if i just buy a rando second hand b16a to replace my busted one no gaurentee same wont happen again. shit happens if i have to replace the engine i may aswell drop a good one in yeah?, just wondering if conversion is much simpler than aus deliverd models because sir is designed to use b series already?

Mate hondA d series engines are so unreliable even a corolla with400,000k will keep goin,meanwhile my eg4 twin carb d15b4 is about to shit itslef after just200,000ks...so to me never going Honda d series again there just made out of paper
