EK splits

Yes i know, another recommend splits thread.

I'm looking to get some new splits budget is about 150-250 (i could probably push 300). obviously cheaper the better.
i mainly listen to electronica, dance, d'n'b sorta stuff but i do listen to alot of and jazz aswell.

I like the sound of the Alpine type-r's.
i'm just looking to know what other people like, so i can go out and have a listen to them.
I also can pick up some un-used Pioneer TS-C160r for pretty cheap, but i'm just wondering since they are old school, newer splits might sound better (although i know they were awesome when they came out).

Also does anyone know the mounting depth for the ek fronts?

I would suggest you add the AD6 to that list as they would definitely be worth bumping it up a little if clarity and crispness is on your list of things to have.

Might be a little difficult to listen to them down in Canberra but I added you to MSN so I can chat with you and see if I can figure out a way for you to check a set out.

Either way, I personally would focus on the midbass of the speaker and clarity. Make sure that it has the kick for the dance music you listen to and make sure everything else comes out nice and clear.

I for one highly recommend the alpine type r's. I've been using some borrowed clarion splits until now and they absolutely blow them away. (will find out the clarion model later).

I just last night installed type r splits in my EK. I imported em from US and ended up costing about $200 all up including shipping. They cost $141US from amazon then got a friend in US to ship em over.

Incase you didn't already know the woofers are double magnet so pretty big and deep at the back. You'll need to remove your door trims and cut the plastic backing and then use the little adapter plate which comes with the speakers. I found though that even the backing plate didn't fit so had to cut it to make it a smaller diameter.

As for sound, amazing just running through a pio 50watt headunit. I'll add a decent amp soon (i know im not doing them justice with no amp ;) )but yeah was amazed how they sound with low power driving em. Far clearer, deeper bass, much nicer treble. The old clarions treble up really got fatiguing after 30minutes. I had treble at -1 on the headunit to counteract this :( Alpines treble is amazing and i still have the splits set to 0db crossover. Seems perfect at that. They have only ~1 hour usage so far so certainly not even worn in. I guess will settle in over the next couple weeks and sound even better. Assuming car audio is similar to headphone and home speaker gear?

In short, I'm a huge headphone and home speaker audiophile and considering what some people crap on about that Alpine make "Competition sound" not clarity I'm absolulately happy in every way. SQ will only get better with use, an amp upgrade and some sound deadening.
