Hey I've got an Ek1 with a D16Y4 and just recently I've started hearing some weird sounds one of them is when I'm in first gear and it has some kind of weird whining sound almost sounds (no crunching or what not) like a pully or something rather, the other one is on down shifts it has a whining sound when I release the clutch stops after a couple of seconds.

If anyone has any idea what the problem might be let me know.

Don't be too worried its just getting old and a bit worn. Change gearbox oil, books suggest and 80w about 1.9 litres. If continues try adding Nulon gearbox treatment. If continues new box:)

Though it sounds very familar to that bearing problem someone described on another topic. Its got fresh gearbox oil and its only just started doing this too.

The other thing I could never figure out where exactly do you put the oil in the gearbox.

You need a funnel and tubing and 2 litres of gear oil. See guide here (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58596) or here (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35408)

How am I supposed to know how much oil is in there already as I stated before I just got it back from a service and asked for the gearbox oil to be replaced.

It will overflow out from the fill hole when its full. Alternatively you can stick your finger in the fill hole and feel if theres oil inside.

gearbox bearings i'm leaning towards.

i've got two friends who had the same issue. required full removal and dismantel for fix.

use genuine honda MTF - best stuff around.

What kind of cost am I looking at? If its expensive might concider selling it or dropping a b series doink in there.

SiReal

Can range anywhere from $400 to under a grand depending on workshop and their pricing.

minimum....

$300 + labour to drop box ( and refit)
$200-500 to open box , clean inspect replace bearing/s
parts = bearing/s....2-6 replaced at $40ish each

If you drop the box try to do every bearing you can at the same time.

Or just drive it until it blows, then buy a new transmission.

I think this whining sound that corresponds to the amount of gas given. one would think its the upper end .. the idle shot up... i thought.. "this is weird." i lowered the idle screw a full turn and which made The plug/seal you put on is not sealing, the noise you are hearing is air being sucked in around .

The problem has been diagnosed, gearbox bearings are rooted gonna get it rebuilt this week hopefully.

And on another note, whats gearboxes other the stock box that will bolt up to a D16Y4

All hydraulic D series gearboxes , from 1992-2000 will fit your car.

EXCEPT the EG Si gearbox (needs b or Si driveshafts to suit)

Cool as, which of these boxes is the toughest?

Typhoontimmy
09-12-2009, 07:24 PM
Well its all sorted out now, the guys did a real nice job of the box the shifts are nice and smooth. The mechanic also said he fiddled around with some of the shift linkages and changes are some what shorter and in a better position.

Nice nice but to answer your question I think the y8 has shorter gear ratio's and therefore the best.I may be wrong..

Typhoontimmy
09-12-2009, 10:21 PM
I have heard that before too, the final drive is supposed to be superior. Never the less I am impressed with the workmanship.

beeza
09-12-2009, 10:25 PM
Yeah awesome.I have a y4 auto and it is strong as! I love the long gears though,1st gear to 60km,2nd to 105km,3rd 140km :)

Typhoontimmy
09-12-2009, 10:28 PM
Mines a y4 manual its 1st -50 2nd -100 3rd -140 something and so on, the ratios are pretty decent for circuit but suck arse for dragging

beeza
09-12-2009, 10:42 PM
Nice, same as mine basically, yeah a bit slow at the 1/4 but man,I'm having a ball out on the track.Calibrating the TPS helped with the acceleration in my car which is whats needed at thetrack.

There's a DIY on here I did about it..

Typhoontimmy
11-12-2009, 03:45 PM
Yeah still getting round to hitting the track, not really sure I'll start that till I have at least all the sway bars and anti roll bars upgraded and a decent bucket seat.

beeza
12-12-2009, 01:28 PM
I agree with that, that's what I did,the bucket seat is so important,it just makes it far more enjoyable,it's funny cause Dave,TurtleEK1 was using the stock seat for a whole year of racing and he said compared to the bucket seat he has the sock seat was sliding on a plank of wood LOL

I'm just getting some track rims so I can use full slicks,I have learned just how good they are,how when you turn they just bite!

I have just slowly been accumulating the things needed and it's fun cause everytime I go to the track I have changed something on the car and it just been improoving it.It is costly slow and steady wins the race!

:)

Typhoontimmy
12-12-2009, 05:50 PM
I've done a fair bit of drag racing but really thats not a civics forte.

beeza
12-12-2009, 07:15 PM
Nice,what cars were you driving?

Any pics/vids? :)

It's fun as the 1/4 mile,it just sucks when it rains or oil gets on the track.Waiting waiting waiting.I do enjoy track racing a lot more,it's such a challenge,it's bloody hard to be consistent and that's the challenge to put good consistent times back to back but it's not easy.I think after I change my suspension the car will be a bit more managable and hopefully I can acheive consistent times. It's just a good personnel challenge.

Just my EK1, I think its due down the strip again soonish feels like its got a bit more balls from the rebuild.

beeza
13-12-2009, 12:31 PM
How many km's on her and what did youh have done with the rebuild?

Video's are sweet,I just need to watch with audio when I get home, car looks sweet too,I love yellow EK hatches!!!

What was your time?

Typhoontimmy
14-12-2009, 01:30 AM
Its done 170 thou on the engine bout under 1000 on the box. 17.1 is my best so far, reckon I should be in the high 16s next run. It looks better now but yeah its not too bad looking, I bought it beacuse it was yellow lol.

beeza
14-12-2009, 08:21 AM
It goes real well! Sounds sweet, quite impressed with the y4.How about a bisimoto stage 1 camshaft,no tuning required, just drop it in and reset the ECU.Obviously Intake, header and exhaust will support this and that will cost more..

The camshaft is $450

Typhoontimmy
14-12-2009, 04:52 PM
ECU prolly the next upgrade, I've got a turbo kit sitting in the garage may make use of it. Yes it does sound phat, no fart cans here. Camshafts sound like fun but wouldnt I be sacrificing my low end torque, which is the civics biggest advantage right now.

beeza
14-12-2009, 05:35 PM
No way, check em' out http://bisimoto.net/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=3_9 it will improove right accross the rev range but ideally having the mods to support it would be the best way to take full advantage of a cam i.e. I/H/E and bigger IM and TB would be good to then if you wanted to go a step further, head work - port and polish,4 angle valve job and shave a little of it to up the compression a bit.

The stage 2 camshaft will need tuning,if your turboing it will require tuning, then you can do them at the same time, fit turbo, camshaft, everything and tune, done!

What ECU will you run,the y4 is the black sheep..I know I couldn't run one but my car is auto, not sure about the manual.I would need to use greddy emanage.

So you buy the stock (http://bisimoto.net/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_9_31_32&products_id=476) cam and they re-grind it.

Rip the ****er out and put an adaptronic in there lol. No other way round its one of the shitty map sensor ones.

beeza
15-12-2009, 04:07 PM
Adaptronic..I never cought ear of that one, wonder if it'll work on the y4 auto?

I wouldn't do it but just out of curiousity.

That's perfect Tim,it come with install instructions :p I'll have a look a when I get it and see if I will attack it..

Pretty psyched for it

beeza
18-12-2009, 06:25 PM
No worries Tim.I'm in tune with my car,so I know about any change that takes place and can relay that info on :)

I got the KYB gas shocks and brembo rear slotted rotors with rda pads fitted today. Also got 2 gaskets put between the 4-2 joint on the headers after bottoming out on a dirt road and destroying the gasket.I saw the big hole, hit the brakes and slid into it,I shoulda' swerved...and my mate goes:

"That hurt,to the core!" LOL

It did too :)

All that cost me $180.
