Mods you can move this if you please but i thought it belongs here. I'm to have a quick whinge about stupid Type Rs. I only have one key to my type R and i just called up honda to see if i can get my key cut any where or has to be at honda. Btw dc2r. He goes you can get your key cut any where but then you have to bring it back to honda to get the key chipped then re program. Askin price 100 bucks + 40 bucks reprograming. This has to be the utter most ****ed up thing i can think of, for a ****en key. btw for those that dont know it needs to be program for the immboliser. I ONLY HAVE ONE FREAKEN KEY TOO. Anyone work at honda melbourne wanna do a dodgy for me :D i would love you muchly

yep that seems to be the situation, $40 bucks programming sounds fair, but I dont know about $100 for a replacement key, maybe coz its a type R key, do some shopping around, aslo you might be screwed if you car was a red key type Immo system, this means if it was and you dont have a red key you cant program a new key into the immo without investing another $300 or so, but there are some places that can copy your existing key transponder.

I thought $100 was for the whole job ie the key plus reprogramming. and u have to leave the car there for the day

I believe you need a RED Key for programming as well ..... but not 100% as my RED key has never been used. I was told not to lose it though as it would cost me an arm and a leg.

Hay euGeR, do you have a DC2r with a red key ???
anyway the red key is only ever used to program the Immo. there is no other use for it.

correct me if im wrong? but i was told the red key was used to immo for one and secondly if u lose all ur keys u can use your red key to drive to a honda dealer ship but once the engine is turned off ur immobliser is triggered and the honda people have to do they stuff to get it running again....but yeah i do have a red key....
So you're saying theres other places that can do chipping and programming? Must do some shopping coz honda said they have to do it...

Hey ECU-MAN -
Yep, I have a Red key - came with the car when I bought it new :D
I thought you might need to red key to re-code the immobiliser and new key :) so that's why it's expensive - coz they said the red key is not cheap.
I was told the red key is the spare key.
If you lose all your black keys, then you can use the red key to by-pass the immobiliser, but then it will change all the codes and so you will need to use the red key from then on and can never use the black key again.
I heard this from the Honda dealers before I bought my car, and they were bragging that "they would even give me a red key if I bought the Type-R from them blah blah..." but I wasn't impressed at the price of the car... haha!
I bought a 2nd hand Type-R privately and the owner had the red key anyway... like he should!

yep thats right fellas, but you cannot loose both black keys as no black keys and a red key is bad and you still will have to spend $$
dc2r you cant bypass the immobiliser with the red key, its only function is to program the immobiliser unit, its not really a spare key.

I just got my car recently (96 Civic Coupe VTi) and the people that sold it to me said that the red key if used in the ignition will render the black keys useless -.-
I then called up Honda to ask how much a replacement black key would be, as long as I had the red key it would cost $82.50 for a replacement key, then an additional $60 to get it cut and reprogrammed, would take about 2 hours. If I didn't have the red key then they have to order it by serial number or something.
I didn't actually need an extra key as I still have both- but the rubber is coming off and I thought if a new key wasn't too expensive I would get a sexy new key... Guess I have to live with the ugly ones for now...
(Off topic: I also asked how much seat covers would cost, $1100 pure lambswool!!!)
