View Full Version : Air freshener ruined my dash :(

Ok heres the story, i bought a "Vent fresh" air freshener about a month back for my car http://www.autoexpressions.com/air-care#vent-fresh%C2%AE .
it was stated on the packaging to be "Spill Resistant" but it evidently it did spill all over my dash taking paint off wherever it went:(. i havent tampered with the air freshener in anyway. would i have a valid case against this company to pay for the fixing of the damage its done? i have already emailed them with the story but yet to get a reply. 3 panels would need replacing including the stereo facia plate which is 705 alone (quoted from my dealer) and in total $1261.25.
i really dont want to pay that sorta money. i know i could leave it but seeing the marks will just eat away at me slowly !!

fark man that looks nasty, have you tried looking at your local wreckers for the part? Honda usually charge a premium for stuff.

Best of luck mate

That sucks dude

They might argue the word 'resistant' in context. Its does say spill resistant not spill proof.

Just keep grilling them about it, your bound to get some form of compensation.

Unluck man.. I never have trusted those things. I buy that "new car smell" spray and use it after I clean my car. Doesn't last though..

doosra had the same problem, but not as severe as yours. He ended up spraying his stereo unit black. See http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=113799

man thats bad,

i suggest u chase it up.

i once bought a product that was a lubracant for my window rails and it had contacted the plastic areas too (naturally) and it would eat away at the paint.

i got compensated for around $900. very cool :)

which was a quote frmo honda.

i have the same problem..!!! the liquid air freshner came off the vent one day when i drove over a bump and without looking properly i put it back on upside down... then i realise its leaking... tried to clean it off but its left this awful stain.. ****in bitch!

call the manufacturer. im sure they will pay for the cost of new dash...its a fault to their product so they should be liable to the costs of the damage. Speak to them and see what they are willing to give you.

yeah ive sent some emails, if they don't reply, ill ring. Auto expressions looks to be a branch company of Shell, so they should do something i think.

HAHAHHAHA.. that's what exactly happened to mine.. it fell on the floor so i picked it up while driving and put it on.. and it stained the fk out of the dash..

So i sprayed the head unit black.. but the surroundings of the headunit are still stained..

never again will i use those air freshners..

Ouch!

I will never put one of those things in my car. I have in the past and never had trouble with them, but I'm not risking it with my angel.

Keep on them man, hopefully they will play ball,if not it can get tricky/difficult/costly on your part, not to mention a real pain in the ass.

Hopefully someone on here can offer some `legal type advice`

its scary to think that the shit in the air freshener rips paint of in seconds and we are breathing it in :S. no thanks lol. i bought a new center glovebox today from the wreckers, and upper vents. was alot cheaper than brand new. i cant stand looking at it so im gonna fix it in the mean time and keep on the bastards for some money. the expensive bit is gonna be the stereo and buttons face plate :( im looking at $700 bucks

Just continuously bug them.

If they don't reply take it to fair trading.
They always wish the person making the claim was a sucker make sure you aren't one.

was it because of the sun?
did the anti spill have a little asterix.

Good to hear from me too man! You could always use one of those dangling things from your mirror or wiper lever? It might not be that great looking but it lasts and damn it works. I had an 85 corolla and it stunk like old....put one of those in it and i never smelt that old smell again. Anyways good luck and all the best =)

Wow! I'm surprised you actually got a reply from them! It'd be great if they came through and took care of you.

I was going to say you could contact the respective industry ombudsman or write to the air freshener company saying you will...they usually crap their pants and fork out the money.

Damn mate! I hope they sort it out soon for you. In future maybe try a spray or two the the floor with a product called Carpet Power. I use that and it makes the car smell really good without being overpowering for longer than most products. It'll also help clean any marks you may get on the floor. I use a little bit of that when I shampoo my carpets.

Yikes. :(

Now I have even more of a reason to hate those awful dash air freshener things. Yuck. Why would anyone want to make their car smell like deodorant? Unless your car is especially ripe smelling, eg child vomit in carpet...
