Big gearbox problem

5th and reverse won't go into gear I went and saw a mechanic and he reckons I'm gonna need to find a new gearbox. It's a 97 5th gen vtir prelude. Please let me know if anyone can get there hands on one and roughly how much they are worth to buy and install. Thanks :(

What's the history of the gearbox?

I think you're better off rebuilding the box because if you get another second hand box.....what's to say it hasn't got it's own problems.

i have the same prob, my 99 atts is at the shop right now, i bet you have to dounle clutch to get into 5th right? and reverse doesnt work at all?

yeh MWAKU, they are a cnt, that god its covered by the warrenty. ah well ill get it back tomorrow, if not tuesday, cant wait now.

yea well, when i bought my civic from a dealer, the transmission was ****ed, it was under warranty so i got it to get fixed, the guy said it would take like a week. but every time it was meant to be done he kept calling me to postpone pick up. 3 weeks till i got my car back. but i guess its up to the mechanic.

Yeah mine is atts aswell. How did you problem happen? And did you replace the gearbox or fix it? How much did it set you back. All info will be much appreciated please

was that a black atts with an oem lip kit advertised at landsvale?

leather interior, 170km on the dial and chrome rims?

yeh it was, dont buy front classic cars in landsvale, all they did was do a lil patch up but it stuffed up again, got my car back today!!! he showed me the syncros, looked like a chewed up bone, and one of the rings was snaped, can runs perfect and all now.

oh btw it costed me 1200 for the syncros and selectors, before warranty, if you got warranty your in luck!

found out that my car also has after market shocks, donno what, most probably super lows ( mechanic said its barely legal height). heavy duty clutch and the wheels are offset.

I duno how the hell u got it for 11,500. the guy said to me 14,500 lol great job u did, altho i wasnt going to buy it anyway just checking it out. its a nice car but i dont plan on keeping my car for heaps long and if i was to buy it with 170km and sell it with around 190ish id have a hard time getting most of my money back. current lude had 117 on clock so thats the main reason i bought it and i got it for 11,500 as well

yeh well we were talking to the salesman and upstraight, like for e.g my mate bought a lexus is200 or 250( donno to be exact), he bought it for 17k, but when we asked the dealer how much they bought it for they said 9k. so any car from a dealer can be brought down a shitload,after all even the best deal could be better, they wont sell the car if they dont make a profit.
ah yehh, well in the near future im going to give it a full engine rebuild, but 170k's is still a lil young for the rebuild

dam avbout vic, donno what good mechanics are down there, but one of the moderators or other memebers could help you with one close to you.
yeah that was the problem on mine, but dont take my word that thats your problem, get your car checked by the mechanics. because ofr mine it was that the 5th gear was worn out and the reverse gear kept being violently thrown into reverse and make the gear at one point get stuck and wouldnt disengage, thus why it wouldnt even move into reverse.
but what ever happens man i hope the best on the best price, because i know it will be fixed but its the cost which will kill.

i think i got my prelude 5th gen 97 at a good deal its auto got it for 6800 - with only 125kms on it i called up revs and the it wasnt a write off soo yeh but dont know if it has being a crash or not :S .

i had the same problem on my lude, exept it was auto. it wouldnt go into reverse. i got some quotes for it and it was around 1.2 for a new box not including labour so yeah gl
