Hey guys,
The names Alex and am the new owner of a Red Honda Civic EK GLi (Manual)
I live in syd, 20 years old, student, studying Information & Communication Technology
My future plans for this civic is to do it up!
Exterior
Black Bonnet - done
Front Lip - found but need to mount..
Rear Lip - unsure
DIY Black Headlights
HIDs
16" spiked rims
Darkest tint window - done
Painting the calipers
Interior
Bucket Style seats
Coloured Interior
Glowing dials
Neons shining at the floor! - changed mind
Miscellaneous
Subwoofer/amp - done
Maybe a POD filter and setting up some cold air intake (seems too advanced for me right now)
removed my resonator.. lol (got stockbox in there)
So ive only been visiting/reading on the forums for quite a while up until now.
(as i didnt have a honda) It took me aaaaages to find a suitable civic
I bought this honda for 4500 (122,000Ks), inside is quite good, however paint is fading at the back side of the civic cos the previous 2 owners just parked it in the sun 24/7.
Also thinking about getting my car resprayed
Looking to respray my car Red again, keeping things simple, hopefully keeping costs down.
Im looking at around a 1k job, is this possible?
Here are some random pictures of the car I bought. (from carsales.com lol)

Hey your GLI is in similar condition to the CXI I picked up the other day. I have found the back half of the car is fading (obviously parked under a carport), mostly noticeable on the rear bumper :( I might consider a respray (Red, same as you) in the future.
I found yours on carsales, my previous owner has taken it down. It was up for $5,400, and I talked him down to $4500 due to the paint damage and a cracked drivers side mirror housing.
I test drove 3-4 before buying, and the one I chose was the best out of them... people need to fix their body damage and replace missing plastic bits! Even the one I ended up going with is missing minor bits! You got a bargain, but I don't wanna be rude and ask how much.

advertised for 6300, then went down to 5800, 5600, 5400
got to an offer and said 4500, it was a done deal
122,000 kms
timing belt, clutch supposedly replaced. (no receipts, however the timing belt did look new)
after buying it, i realised i had bought it off a friends dad lol...... who sold it through his brother
minor cracks along the window side (black plastic thing)
oh also my paint fading is exactly the same as yours, rear fading, front seems all fine and dandy..

Mine has 172k and its a 96, it had some work done to the clutch also.. and... rear brakes and suspension overhauled (descriptive mechanic lol), also seems to have a new muffler too, which is a shame cause I will probably rip it off in a few months for something nice and shiny :P maybe I can live with a chrome tip for now.
Real bargain with that 98 GLI, I have been hunting for about 2 months online and about 2 weeks physically... You really talked that guy down, mine was cringing at $4500 and the higher priced ones wouldn't budge over the phone. They are so hard to find in what I consider 'good condition' within that price range. And I don't know what goes through peoples heads when they put a car up for sale at a 'normal' price with panel damage. Fading I can deal with but when the thing has been hit by a bus...

carsales.com has got to the one of the worst places to buy in all honesty,
sellers check whats available at what price,
and put their price according to whats around.
(this can be an advantage sometimes)
so you have around 4 people who over price their CXi online,
people who dont know any better just price according to them.
and since the over priced CXi's dont budge,
everybody thinks they can now sell their CXi for an outrageous amount.
the stupidest thing is that you see CXi's selling for more than GLi's in most cases.
Ive seen alot of GLi's come and go over the year,
and they have generally been cheaper than the CXi model.
(i have been searching online for a good 4-5 months)
(i learned alot)
(the CXi has no tacho -.-)
(isnt that the most vital thing a manual car needs.....)
it really pisses me off to see the honda civic EK 96-00 market on carsales.com screwed up...
anyway
enough ranting
oh and with my purchase, i did not talk him down at all!
hes just sitting in his brick fence going, you give me an offer, ill call my dad and see if he will agree.
he called, and it was done

Haha nice, up here there really is only CXI's within driving range, without getting ridiculous (3-4hours) and they are all up for $5500ish it has been that way for 3 or so months, I missed out on... 2 GLI models, both really neat with mags even, someone snapped them up before I had a chance to call, and they went for the $5500 with no price drop (I was back and forth on one of them).
I even went round the dealerships and they are asking up to $6000 for a CXI with like 200k+ on it. If I had known about this forum earlier on in the piece things may have played out slightly different. I basically gave up, I needed a car for work and grabbed a decent CXI, I'll probably just tidy it up a bit then sell it in a couple of years. Maybe with a respray.
EDIT: No Tacho in the CXI is a downer, but not a show stopper. Alot of 90's small hatch's don't have it, my mates middle of the range Barina has no Tacho! I use the engine noise/k's (how I was taught) with the gears. It's the first manual I have driven in about 3 years, I've screwed up some hill starts a few times already. The CXI I got has air-con so that is a major plus. Bit annoyed with the fading but what can you do.

i dont even know how to drive a manual yet, so having a tacho is a must for me while im learning.. i guess i could go with the engine revs as that makes sense, but hey. im pretty lazy, partly the fact why i was more inclined towards a GLi was because of the power windows, power side mirrors but mainly the tacho.
just got my greens over a week ago, i wonder how i will do on a manual
sounds like you had a rough time searching for you car.. but i guess a car is just a car in the end, if you are satisfied with it, then theres nothing else that matters

I know ALOT of places that do spray painting...
I know places that do them from 2000 and do them better then places for 7000
Differences is that with 7000 you get a life-time gurantee on the paint..
Look around mate, you'll find something good :)
ASK for previous work, that should be a VERY BIG key in your decision on where to get it sprayed man.
My Red DC5R is gettin resprayed atm... Let me know how you go ok =)

$7000! My mate got his ute resprayed here for $1000, same body color as before, just plain light green. I am tempted to get the rear boot lip sprayed, the boot and the rear bumper, if its all too much, just so the car is all red again. But I wont be doing it for a while, my car is just the work runabout.
aznalex
21-12-2009, 11:03 AM
ooh a distant friend said he can do my whole car red again for 1200
2 pack baked
and if i leave the bonnet out, it will be cheaper
(i am looking for a black bonnet)
just a random question, how long will acrylic paint last on a car for?
assuming it is sprayed over the existing faded red

I asked my dad, and the guy that did rust repair and roof respray for my dads 4x4 charged $400. Just for the square roof. He did a perfect job though, it was pretty much spot on to the colour of the car, which is a hard colour to find, we cant even get touch up paint.
So if the rear bumper annoys me enough later next year I might get him to respray the items I stated above that have the most sun damage. My dad has a compressor and spray gun kit. But he isn't confident enough to do the job himself! I'd be willing to put the Honda in as a Guinea pig!

woooooow i just tried to get some practice in my manual civic.. (first time)
i can not get it to start properly from a stand still position!
shifting gears while moving is fine
its so hard to put all my theory knowledge into practice when the car doesnt obey me >:( haha..

congrats on the purchase buddy, looks like you got a good deal. looks clean.
practice makes perfect! probably take the beast for a spin in the local carpark if you're not too confident on the road!
have fun!
Oh yeah I remember those days, hopping along! Keep it up dude, practice does make perfect. :D

dont go putting HID's in those stock headlight housings lol
aznalex
24-12-2009, 10:19 PM
day 2 of my practice, i can actually make the car go from a starting position now.
but slight jump.
Friend later explained to me going up a hill when your engine doesnt have enough power does damage to your valves =s.. (car shaking while going up hill)
Raztaz. will something bad happen if i put HID's in the stock headlight housings?
cos i have no idea lol, you'd have to explain to me since im new to modding.

I noticed the clutch friction point is higher than most vehicles I have driven. I actually stalled it EPICLY out of the driveway when test driving. I've also found that the little Honda engine responds better to a bit of revving, especially on a slight hill situation. My dad likens it to his work vans. If I apply a slight amount of accelerator as I engage 1st, I have found that it will get going a lot smoother and easier. Everyone drives a manual their own way, but my best advice is that if all else fails, floor the clutch so the engine doesn't stall, you can always try again that way. Also the brake/hand-brake on a hill start, don't wanna damage that Mercedes behind you!
On another issue, the service record before last, 165000, says mine got its oil replaced, however I am beginning to believe that the guy got ripped by his mechanic, the oil looks to me, someone that watched dad open the bonnet of a commodore all his life, as if its a few years old... unless 8000k is about time for new oil? Car seems to run fine but its a concern I would like some peace of mind with, so I am gonna get a new oil filter and some good oil for her next time I am out with my father.
I need to find a bolt for the front bumper too, the two that are directly under the front, one is missing completely. It doesn't effect it but it annoys me all the same haha.
OH and I polished up the paint, hard yakka, but well worth it, the fading looks so much better, the only real noticeable bit is the top of the rear bumper. But it now has an even shininess to it, which in sunlight actually masks the fading quite well :p also removed all but the deep marks in the paint, some panels look like new!
I am definitely getting a new stereo and wheels with my next pay, I can't stand the wheel-barrow wheels it has on it! I slid on a roundabout the other day!
EDIT: I replaced my headlight bulbs with Narva Blue/Arctic (can't remember) that my dad had spare in the garage, we use them in the commodore and they give off a satisfying amount of white light for me.

yeah i also learned how to engage first today.
rev to 2000rpm, let go at the clutch choke point slowly, then revv it to 3000
i still need to practice, it feels like so much accuracy is needed while taking off!
regarding your oil change, sounds like it missed a service but that shouldnt be too bad.
usually you'd get the oil replaced every 5000Ks or every 6 months if you dont drive hard.
I guess if you drive like a granny then you can replace the oil at an even later stage.
Reading about engine oil for a year or two has given me quite some information, facts, myths and so on.
-Black engine oil is sometimes regarded to be perfectly fine, but people use it as a visual sign to change engine oil.
-Mixing different types of engine oil, should be fine if the velocity of the oil is similar. Never thick and thin oil together like 10w40 and 20w50. 5w40, 10w40, 15w40 is okay i think.
-Branded engine oil is usually overlooked, people think the more you pay the better it is, where that is usually the case, sometimes that isnt correct. Castrol Magnatech is the same as Repcos generic branded engine oil. Just different bottle (they get their oil from the same plant+source)
what type of polish did you use? i used to polish my previous car with a bottle of liquid turtle wax, makes it look real good, but when the rain comes, you get the biggest sad face because all your effort just washes away lol..
I found myself polishing every 2 weeks due to rain and having to wash the car cos dirt was sticking to the car. Then i gave up. sold the car, got a Honda! haha
tsg88
25-12-2009, 02:01 AM
Trusty turtle wax, but I ran out halfway, my dad had a backup, Kitten brand... so half of the car is done with Turtle Wax, half of the car is done with the Kitten version of it, I made sure I did whole panels though. The Kitten stuff was a lot harder to work with. It rained today and didn't seem to change my hard work but I can see myself re-doing it lightly every few months, the first time was hardcore lol, I did 3 coats on the faded bits from my dads advice, but maybe he just wanted to watch me working my arse off. haha.
Guessing the previous owner drove like a granny cause that's what they were! Last service he didn't do too much, I think it got to 170000 and he decided to get the roadworthy and sell it, so it missed that oil change. I will probably get Valvoline something or rather, know of a recommended oil type for our engines? My dad is a bit of a Valvoline fan.
EDIT: Looking at the picture of yours, I think mine may actually have lowering springs... or something, may be stuffed but it rides alright... I could swear its sitting lower than yours does... Will have to take a picture of the beast when I get some time.

thats a very nice car man. very clean and in good condition to start modding. 4.5k isnt that bad.. i picked mine up for 6.6k 6 months ago with 170k kms and 12months rego. heaps of people say im an idiot for paying that price, but it was so perfect inside/out, and black ek gli's are hard to find.
pm me if u need some parts, i have some lying around but cbf making a for sale thread, ive got a intake (short ram) with a generic pod, rear strut bar and a genuine type r gear knob.
goodluck with the car and treat it well:thumbsup:
