View Full Version : 1997 Prelude VTIR Tiptronic Problems
Hi Guys,
I drive a 97 Prelude Tiptronic VTIR. As I was driving recently, 3rd gear started to play up. I would accelerate, the engine would rev as normal, but the power wasn't getting to the wheels. Then after a while, 3rd gear stopped working altogether...being in 3rd gear is now like being in neutral.
I'm not 100% sure, but I feel the other gears are suffering the same problem, but I have not drove it since to really test it out.
Does anyone know what the exact problem is here?
If it's definately my gearbox, how much will it cost to repair or replace it?
I live in Sydney and I'd appreciate if anyone could refer me a mechanic that can fix this.
Thanks.

its seems like ur suffering from the weak gear box on the 97-98 5th gens. Some ppl have had their transmission failed on them in the past.
i dont konw how much it would cost to fix but the guys on www.preludeaustralia.com should be able to help you out.
Also some threads have already discussed the issues of the weak gearbox in the early model 5th gens. just search :)

cost you about 1k for the gearbox, another 1k on labour, it just depends. could be more on labor, could be less if you get it backyard or someone you know. should be like 2-3k all together

Center Console With Shift Boot
5spd Pedal Assembly
Clutch Cable
Manual transmission
Flywheel
Starter motor (manual transmission)
Clutch
Throw out bearing, Pilot bearing and clutch alignment tool (most clutch "kits" include a new throw out bearing, pilot and alignment tool)
Shift linkage (best to get one complete with shifter)
ECU (optional, you can easily just trick your auto one)
Transmission mount (may be possible to mod your existing one)

esj, if your gear indicator on the odometer starts to blink, it means your gears are as good as fked. be prepared to pay for either an auto transmission changeover to a refurbished one or a reco recoed auto transmission.either way, its gonna cost quite a hell of a lot
