View Full Version : Euro Muffler Change - Question

I've recently removed the mid resonator and mid muffler from the stock Euro (CL9) exhaust and it's given a noticeable boost to my Euro's performance (I have the Mugen intake and Toda headers with a Metal high flow cat installed). The car revved much easier with better throttle response and punch.
The problem is that it made my exhaust sound very hollow and raspy (around 2000-3000rpm esp.). Took it back to the exhaust shop that installed it and they said that it's caused by the stock mufflers not being able to handle the increased amount of exhaust flow. The increased flow was causing the internals of the muffler to vibrate excessively.
I took it back to the exhaust shop and they installed a bullet style resonator and it's improved things a bit without killing performance. The raspiness is still not gone so I'm thinking of replacing the stock mufflers with something that can handle more flow down the track.
I like the fact the the stock mufflers are quiet with no drone but I want to remove the raspy sound and get a deeper note. Are there mufflers out there that can achieve this goal (Magnaflow, Xforce etc)? What kind (model no?) do I need to get for it to fit the Euro? What about resonated exhaust tips, do they help at all?
I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance! :)

I've heard Magnaflow mufflers work well.

Just an idea here... you might hit the exact same problems as with the Euro ones. But would the S2000 mufflers be any good?

Magnaflow are ok, from personal experience you will be best off looking at some lukey mufflers.. You will get what you are after

Thanks for the ideas guys. Would it be best just to go to a muffler shop and find out which model fits the Euro?
The Magnaflow street/race ones are $300+ each which is too expensive (almost the cost of a catback system) if I'm getting 2. The Lukey ones seem to be in the $100 each mark which is more reasonable.

Believe it or not Magnaflow is about 10 min from me here in socal. I used to work there actually. I can say that I believe these are the best mufflers made, quality and performance wise. Not for everyone but definitely a good bet!

I found a place in Sydney called Best Mufflers (www.bestmufflers.com (http://www.bestmufflers.com)) that sells both Magnaflow and Lukey mufflers. The Magnaflows are $320 each so for the Euro you're looking at $640 + installation.
I called them up yesterday and they're charging approximately $1200 for a full catback or $1000 for mufflers only. It's probably most economical to buy the mufflers and install it elsewhere.
Here's a sound clip of the Lukey mufflers (which sounds alright imo): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJ4WFdKViSI

Give Performance exhaust (Parra) a call. A while ago i got quoted ~$850 for a dual magnaflow muffler catback exhaust...

That's what I think too. If you're willing to spend close to a grand you might as well buy a Jap made catback.

It can only if it relates to that part of the car. You don't void the warranty of the whole car by changing a part.

 And don't let any dealer tell you otherwise.
BTW, Magna is the Latin word for "great", "large", "very much". Magnaflow = Greatflow

Yeah I've driven a Euro with that exhaust and it drones quite badly when cruising or going uphill. The exhaust tips are also a bit too big for my liking.

I would consider the xForce VX-05. Reasonably priced and would have to be one of the best sounding mufflers for Honda's. The only downside is that they need a tip put on. You only get the muffler itself. If your willing to just use one and get a custom made cat back using the xForce as a mid-muffler and then just run straight pipes to the rear then its good. It will be noticably louder than standard though. Not annoying loud though. I think they are around $200ea from Felix.

Update: I've changed the stock mufflers to OBX SP2 ones (Greddy SP2 copy) and it looks great and sounds very deep like a WRX. The raspiness is completely gone and there is very minimal boom in the cabin. It's slightly on the loud side imo but i expect it to quiet down a bit once the pipes get coated with carbon.

If the mufflers you purchased are new, expect them to get louder. Not quieten down. It was a slight relief when the mechanic that put a twin loop on my old DC2 told me it would get louder once "worn in"...it almost sounded standard! It did get a little bit louder but not too much of a differance.

The mufflers are new but after a day or so of driving they're a bit quieter. My headers used to make a really loud hissing sound and 2 weeks of driving later the sound almost completely disappeared. An exhaust shop I went to told me that the carbon from your exhaust coats the pipes and muffles the sound in the process.
I think I'll reevaluate things after a few weeks. I can always add a small resonator to reduce the volume a bit down the track if it's necessary. There's a lot more grunt up top now. VTEC screams and you can really feel the punch.

That's odd.
An exhaust shop told me the complete opposite. Two differant ones actually all said that after its used for a while/ "worn in". It will get louder. When I had the twinloop on my dc2 it sounded very close to stock muffler at first but after a week it was louder and more noticable below 4000rpm.

I'm not quite sure to be honest. The exhaust is not as noisy as it was a few days ago but I think I'll still want to reduce the noise a bit. It sounds very nice but can get slightly tiresome in stop start traffic (around 2000-3000rpm). I've already got a bullet style resonator so I think another mini resonator should make it perfect.
