Hey guys,
I was having an argument with a guy who doesnt know much about honda engines, but seems to know a bit about cars.

Well he says the civic ek hatch cant do 190
the car has 88kw brand new
and probably has 70kw now after 10 years
says all the videos on youtube with stock civics going 200-240 is bullsh1t.

ps. this guy likes to argue alot and talk bs even when hes wrong
so are there any enthusiasts out there which could prove him wrong?

oh interesting, so the youtube vids are all downhill i guess..

but what about the Kw thing my friend said

88kw brand new
70kw now?

would a car really lose that many Kw over 10 years?

lets say the car has 130,000 kms, 10 years old.

yes it would. carbon buildup, wear on parts like bearings, contact patches. missed oil changes. it all adds up.

well maybe not 18kw. but 88kw is brand new at the fly, you can take 10% off for the age and another at least 10% through drivetrain losses.

So the speed limit in Australia is 110 max guys... If your feeling spirited, there is no law against reaching the speed limit as fast as physically possible? But whats the point, you'll probably run up the arse of grandma in her Camry.

However on a track, I'd be shitting myself at 160-180 in a Civic, especially when the Civic is so low to the ground with a low seating position. It reminds me of the sensation you get from a Go Kart, only doing 80ish but feeling like your flying.

Unless a car has been poorly maintained... then the kw can go down... my EK is the fastest/smoothest one I test drove. One was a complete bucket though. I don't for a second think its pulling 88kw, but I reckon anywhere in the mid 70's is a comfortable area for our cars ages. Also, its a Honda so it has probably held its power more than something like a Hyundai/Kia or most poorer quality 4cyl cars from the 90's.

what can we do to bring back some of the Kws?

Aside from an engine and gearbox rebuild? Not much... getting the car tuned and cleaning out/replacing with new fluids can help... I suppose. Other than that, mod the sucker lol. Cold air intake, extractors and a 2" exhaust with a nice muffler... should get some power back.

its achievable in most 4cyl shopping trolleys. i was surprised too, d16eg for example
But in a controlled area and off sydney roads
