im guessing buy a rev gauge which lets you set a shift light on any rpm you want, so set the revs to 5000 and you could use the power from the shift light to power the LED's.

best to get a shift light for that application, it comes in a kit so you can wire it up and set the light to come on at certain rpm.

Other wise you'll have to look into relays n stuff.

Sounds like a task for a frequency switch kit from Jaycar. (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KC5378&CATID=25&form=CAT&SUBCATID=347)

Or you could spend $200+ on a big, ugly and useless tacho...

If you dont know how to solder i would get someone who is good at soldering and electronics to assemble it for you, you wouldnt want to spend your hard earned money on a kit only to f**k it up when you assemble it.

Xede single-stage shift light, chiptorque sell them.

I built them into my cluster on my previous car, couldnt see them unless they lit up. they are a bit exxy but very compact and work a charm.
