hey guys,

just a quick question, I've returned home, letting someone else drive the type R and a few streets away i smelt this strong burning smell coming from somewhere in the car. I got him to pull over and i took it back home and the car isn't pulling at all. The minute you rev the car to keep motion forward it feels like it doesn't engage the clutch at all and the revs just build with little forward motion. Just making sure that you think it's a clutch problem and nothing else?

Cheers guys

Sounds like burnt clutch. Was the guy resting his foot on the clutch pedal while he was driving?

Time for that exedy HF02 lightweight flywheel and Exedy sports organic clutch. :)

If you are looking into modding the car (Aftermarket clutch and flywheel) DO IT NOW!!

Getting your clutch changed in your car is a full day exercise.

I would also recommend an Excedy HD clutch and Lightweight flywheel (Either Toda or Excedy) as these mods alone make the car a bit more exciting to drive, but don't make it impossible to drive on a daily basis (Well I didn't find it hard)

Clutch was probably at the last legs of its life and his mate probably was the straw that broke the camel's back. lol

hmmm, no good mate.
oh well, aftermarket flywheel and hd clutch it is than.
Im planning on getting the exedy lightweight fly and HD clutch when my gearbox gets work done. Might as well do it when the box is out.

your mate is a lousy manual driver, probably riding the clutch

yeah he isnt the best of drivers, last time I let ANYONE near the R, unless its another R driver lol. Well I've taken her to the garage, and I still have the god awful smell imprinted on my brain, you know the one, burnt clutch, yummy, but she is waiting there until the parts for the exedy HF02 lightweight flywheel and Exedy sports organic clutch to come in and she will be sweet, problem is the problem happened in sydney and so now I have to go back to canberra without her! :(

cheers for all the comments guys!

Hey jamer

Sorry to hear bout your clutch being fried, Can you let us know the difference you feel with the clutch and flywheel? Looking forward to doing this in my car instead of a exhaust cause don't want that noise but still want decent power gains

thanks

Hey guys,

I too have a similar problem, but not of a burnt clutch smell, but of oil =\
On top of that, my clutch is slipping aswell - every now n then whilst cruising, once i hit accelerate the revs don't automatically react until about half a second later with a rev which seems odd..

I know i have to get a clutch replacement, but any clue on the oil smell ? =S

Oil leaking out through the bearing seal onto the clutch?

Oil leaking out through the bearing seal onto the clutch?
Could that be it ?? I'm not sure where its coming from but when i check my garage as i exit, there seems to be droplets of oil aswell.

My mate (whom i bought it off), took it to the repairs to get it fixed but he told me that "somehow" it fixed itself and just to replace the clutch. But it would be convenient to know what the problem was in the first place. Any idea ?

Clean up your garage floor, and the underside of your engine of all the oil there now so it looks clean. Put newspaper underneath and have a look the next day to determine where the oil droplets are coming from. Then you look at the underside of the engine and the whole thing should be clean except for where the new oil has leaked from. That will tell you the general area where the leak is coming from.

noob question regarding the clutch:

can I change to a HD clutch without changing the flywheel? or I need to change the combo together?

yes u can, but people usually do it together because changing either the clutch or flywheel alone is expensive!

do it together, i know its bit more expensive, but a lighter or matched up flywheel is totally worth it.
