Put the original hood back on today, and realised that theres a massive gap on one side of the hood to the fender. Tried moving the hinges around but it won't budge.
Any tips on how i can get it straight again?

tried adjusting those black little knob things that make the hood sit higher/lower?

the gap a horizontal or vertical thing?

ill try the moving the black knob. The guards are a bit of a pain. Tried it today and it took to much effort.

plastic mallet time yo~

if not plastic mallet anyway

this would help,

other than that losen your fender screws push it to align with the bonnet, and screw it back tight.

it takes a bit of playing around with.

and if you say you're not bothered, then dont bother aligning the bonnet at all.

LOLLOL. narh it was late when i do it with my mate. So we kinda cbf. gonna take the whole car apart tomorrow and realign all the bars. Hopefully this will work.
Anyone with more suggestions, please feel free to tell me. Need as many advice as possible.

As other people have suggested, try loosening or taking out the bolts used to bolt the hood onto the hinges and get a friend to help you align it properly before retightening the bolts
I changed hoods to an oem but from another car, and the hood has to sit a bit further on 1 side than the other in order to align the bolt holes to the hinges so i can bolt them in, tis not that bad and it doesnt bother me so yeah

good luck

well said. lol

use rubber mallet if you can, i just said plastic mallet thats all i got.

loosen the bolts at the top. close bonnet slightly and tap the top near hinges then tap bottom near lights, on the side that has the massive gap.

Finally fixed it. Thanks for all the input guys. I used a drill to redrill the holes in the fenders. Note: Fenders are fibreglass. Pulled the fenders back and fourth and got it into the right position. Hood closed with just a fraction of a gap on the side with the biggest gap.

well his hood was probably lined up right, his aftermarket fibreglass fenders were probably out of whack to begin with

hisoka
19-01-2010, 10:17 PM
yeah all aftermarket fenders of fibreglass are all different fitment.

and if its a copy of a aftermarket its even worse lol. sometimes they dont even come with holes drilled, you just make ure own to fit them

I have the same problem, actually my hood is too far forward. My local panel beater suggested that maybe the hinges are bent and suggested sourcing actual hinges from a wrecker.

Does anyone have any .2 on this?

open it, loosen it by opening the bolts , plastic mallet it backwards then try see if it lines up. how would your hinges be bent, you race with your bonnet open ?

were in brisbane are you anyway

Very true Hisoka, I'll buy a rubber mallet and give it a go. Do you think I can do it without a helper?

I agree, its unlikely that the hinges are bent.

BTW I'm in the inner South West.

ive done it most times without a helper. but just get someone incase.

you might have just tightened it to much, just try loosening it then close it and push it back. should be good

Thanks Hisoka.

Should I loosen it at the part at the bonnet or at the body? Loosening the latter means taking off the wipers + the big plastic bit below the wipers.
I guess I should check in the manual.

I adjusted the bonnet today. I followed the Honda service manual which necessetates adjusting via the lower bolts of the hinges. Removing the hood seal and cowl cover were a bitch to say the least. The clips were already massacred by whatever noob windscreen repair man had had a
go at them previously.

I'd hate to be a panel beater. Hood still refuses to line up perfectly,. F++k it, I'm not gonna adjust the fenders, which would probably be the next step.

It's better than before, but still aint perfect.

BTW, no rubber mallet was necessary.

LOLLOL, i cant believe this thread is still runnning. Yah Mum, you need a rubber mallet. Loosening the hinges and moving it doesn't do shit all.

19-05-2010, 01:11 PM
WTF? You don't need a mallet, and absolutely nothing should be bent into place. The bolt holes are bigger than the bolts, there's wiggle room.

hisoka
19-05-2010, 02:18 PM
who said anything about bending.~ rubber mallet with a cloth makes it easier to move if your the only person working on the car. the slightest taps will move it if the top is loosened enough. sure you can move it normally, but to get it perfect your gonna need to tap it with something

I managed to move it without a mallet. There was a bit of silicon sealant where the hinge meets the body, so I just took off the hood (hinges and all), then removed the sealant so that it could be easier to move around, re-installed the hood with loose bolts and lined it up that way.

I was a bit worried that the mallet might dent the bonnet, but it would have come in handy when I was raging (so I could beat the sh+t out of my vti-r and its diabolical bent cowl cover clips!!!) as mentioned before.

I've worked out my problem. The reason the hood is out is because upon close insepection of the gaps, i can tell that my EM1 has been hit in the right side fender/door at some stage. The gaps are out on both of these. Thats why my paintwork is in such good nick, because the whole thing has had a full (looks like a real professional $6k+ job) respray.

If I wanna get it looking good, I'll have to adjust both the fender and the door. Apart from this, the car is really clean. I'll either have to look into doing these or just leave it. I enjoy mechanical work, but panel work makes me rage big time.
