Hi Guys,

I am looking to upgrade my stock 14' jobbies to something in a 16' wheel. I would prefer something 'light-weight' but looking to spend no more than about $1,700 with tyres.

I want something that looks 'nice' and fits in with the stock-modified look of the car:

I have 4 photoshop images below and I was hoping you could tell me which ones you like the best, or any other opinions on wheels you might have:

Thanks,

1. ROH Shift R (Black with machined lip)

OZ Ultraleggera - if you have to ... but i would either put some replica advans that RaceNation is selling or some honda blades

cant say any of those wheels are very nice ... they look like something you put on a lancer

everyone is different i spose

^^ agreed. none of those rims really suit a civic.

mate you can grab a set of rota 16'' for about $900, then you can spend the rest of it on decent tyres.

http://www.rotawheels.com/wheelcatalog.asp

and most of them are good in styling too, more like all replicated but hey..

let us know of what think b4 buying them :D

yea none of thous does it for me either,
I'd suggest some 16" sportmaxes, they are light weight. Or some Enkie's

If you like them alot then go ahead, everyone to their opinions and its your car in the end.

Thanks for the replies guys, yeh i see what you mean some of those choices look pretty 'pedestrian' huh - Shift R's are probably the 'best' - but what do you think on replica Type R wheels (because of 4 stud pattern and not looking to get 5 stud conversion)?

Guy in Melbourne is selling FD2R wheels - have pic below and link:

FD2R and ROH if i have to choose between them all. But i would recommend sumthin like Rotas, Sportmax or Axis given the budget.

Your Civic would look sick with these type r mags without a doubt. But if u are poor and don't wanna 5 stud conversion, i think that shift Rs are pretty nice IMO.

Sorry to hijack, but IMHO i think that you should save up for a turbo, or b18C because your Civic looks too hot to have just a d16y4. Put the 1k u'll spend on wheels into one of the two.

BTW, ive got speedy edge 16s and they are sick wheels. Dont go too large. Of course my car is silver , so the black/machined lip suits my body colour. Uve got to keep 'em clean though, they look shit if they are covered in dust.

Thanks for the honest opinions guys - it's really great to hear all ur thoughts!

I would love to get a VTEC under the bonnet Mikecivic78, TRUST ME, but I don't think I'm willing to go down that path - maybe for the next person who would want to buy it (sometime down the track one day) i'll leave the engine for them - this 98 D16Y4 has under 50,000kms on it (originally my Dad's driving school car believe it or not!), so I know the whole history of the car and that's why I'm not changing it - but some cams and an ECU wouldn't go a stray :-)

I guess my only concern with the FD2R wheels is if 17 inch is 'too big' - a lot of guys on the forum say 16 is as big as you would want to go for an EK...?

anzai
26-01-2010, 02:13 AM
your absolutely right. if u want regret down the road, by all means go for it.

trust me ive been there done that, im stuck with my 17'' gmax randoms until i have enough $$ to get a new set of 15'' or 16''. if u really want to chuck 17'' youd have to put some kits on as well. if ur keeping it jdm look, 16'' would be max with lowest possible profile tyres.

otherwise go 15'', better for handling too =)

Mikecivic78
26-01-2010, 02:18 AM
i agree, 15" or 16'"

205/45/16

or

215/40/16

remember, 195/55/15 is stock EK vti-r size.

Alvis

Thanks guys, yep 16'/15' is what I've read on the forums & good to hear ur experiences as well - and because I'm an amateur when it comes to wheels what 'exactly' is the biggest issue with 17 inch rims as opposed to 16s (not trying to justify, just understand)?

Does it have to do with how much you lower the car when you put suspension on? I would be looking to fit BC coilovers and only lower it 8-10mm, else can't clear my driveway lol :-)

Mugen Civic
26-01-2010, 10:29 AM
yea i'd say stick with 15" or 16"
I had 17" before on my EK sedan and it was a hard ride, lowered about 1.5" and it scrubs on full lock. Scrubs also on some compression from road bumps.

Now i use 15" and its great, much better handling. Its what i use to track.

Thanks Mugen Civic - looks like it might be the ROH Shift R's then, didn't really like the Rota wheel look - and at least ROH is a reputable brand.. but I'll see how things go over the next lil bit :-)

Thanks again for all your feedback, always appreciated.
Happy Oz Day guys!

Personally I wouldn't get the Type R rims if my car wasn't Type R. It looks like your trying too hard.
But that's my opinion. If you really like that look.. go for it mate and believe in your instincts don't worry what others on here like myself have to say..

Good Luck with the decision and share photos of the rims on your car that you do buy in the future!!:thumbsup:

how about OEM EM1 rims for your ride ?

yeh true, point taken on trying to hard with Type R rims - plus only a 1 year structural warranty so I don't think they would be the best quality wheel for something that costs more than an ROH rim as a point of reference...

Thanks bennjamin, pm sent :-)

Thanks xcwizit,

Yeh I tend to agree - and I didn't know this, but the EM1 rims we got on the Coupe version in Oz are known as the 'Si' rims in the US (I think for the facelifted 99-00 model tho) - so really fits in nice with the stock-modified look of the car. Going to check out a set tomorrow, which look in pretty good condish, so I'll keep you posted!

too bad the em1 rims look horrid when your cars dumped
high offset low width ftl

case in point; clicky (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=102790&highlight=elim)

Alvis

Yeh good point vinnY. That is so unpractical dumping your car that low tho - just looks stupid anyway (only in America lol). I can't even go an inch lower because of my driveway!

Anyway, yes I did end up buying the EM1 rims!

They were in pretty good condition (for an old rim) - 2 are pretty much perfect, the other 2 have some slight gutter marks on outside of rim and one has a mark on the face which I wasn't too happy about... but hopefully I can take them to get polished up this week and it will help disguise it a bit - but i think any other person not as fussy as me would just whack them on the car anyway lol because they're really not that bad :-)

I cleaned them up this arvo with some Meguire's wheel cleaner - wow, friggin powerful stuff had to put gloves on to use it else just irritates your skin but works a treat getting 10+ year old grime off.

As promised, I took some quick before/after photos to show you guys:

no use sitting them next to the car giving it the mexican-offset look

Thanks for the comments fellas,

$600 with tyres was what i paid (OzHonda member and they are 4x100 stud pattern) and they were in pretty good condition else I wouldn't have paid that much.

There is another member on here - 'bennjamin' selling 4 of these rims (without tyres) for $400 - I think he's on this thread if you guys are interested...

2 were 95% clean, 2 others about 80% with a few marks on the rim, but my Dad has fixed up rims before - so we just filed back some of the burrs to make it smooth, ran over it with some wet/dry sandpaper to tidy up the edges, got a drill with a buffer attachment and gave it a hit, then topped it off with some metal polish and they came up really well :-)

Hopefully I can get them fitted and balanced this wkend and show you the finished product!

Thanks again for following the thread :-)

Thanks xcwizit, and yep, I've taken your advice and finally decided to go with the EM1 (Si) wheels. Given everything else is Honda/Mugen parts it keeps that 'stock modified', rather than 'aftermarket modified' look of the car nicely.

I've shod them in a good all 'rounder tyre in the form of Michelin Proceda 195/50/15 rubber - haven't had the chance to take some good photos cause of the rainy weather but got a few quick snaps on the weekend:
