as some of you might know my gearbox is crunching 3rd and its finnally time to get her out n get it rebuilt.

iv gotten quotes on Second hand boxs and there $1750 or more depending on condition or i can get mine fully rebuilt for $1500.

iv heard or read somewere that AP2 Syncros are the bomb BUT i went to honda today to see whats goin on and a few internals are different between 00 - 03 and 04 onwards.

has enyone with an AP1 put AP2 syncros or other components into there AP1 box?

Should be able to pick up a 2nd hand box for far less than 1750 on the 2nd hand market.

I'll have a hunt round for ya.

they are compared to usdm s2000's and i dont think audm s2000's came with the cf synchros.

Just get a reco on your box and look after it with the right lubes and what not and im sure you should be fine. Dont forget the person who had it before you might not have looked after it at all and was bound to go at any given moment. I think untill your going to go f/i then you will need something abit stronger.

ever since i changer to DEX3 in the gearbox the cruching has become less occurant and the shifting is so so so much smoother. so i think if i do get her build its back to dex3 for me.

I dunno dude at the end of the day its your choice. IMO i'd get a rebuild only because its just like new. and i know if you were to try and source out ap2 synchros it wont be cheap. But goodluck man.

i would run a thinner viscosity synthetic gearbox oil, say a 70w90, instead of running atf dex3. but your choice at the end of the day

sorry if its off the topic but same title.

is the s2000 gearbox notchy when u change gears
or is it suppose to be smooth?

sometimes my gear change is so smooth
and sometimes it different gears its just abit notchy.
like theres something in the way.. not that i can't
push it through or anything and need force

i just want my gear change smooth everytime
but wanted to see if that was normal?

thought maybe i needed thicker gearbox oil
but prefer to use OEM oil

thicker oil isnt the way to go at all.

try use DEX3 i think its liquid gold for gearboxs

That one I linked above is $55K Yen, or approx ~$700 + post, however the cost to post it in your current need for a box renders it useless unless you plan to have the car off the road for 2 months while you wait for it to arrive by boat.

I'm surprised I haven't found one in AU for sale yet, let alone one cheap enough to warrant buying. I have come across a few engine & box for sale, may have to persuade a seller to seperate them?

There is a reason why a certain viscosity is used and/or recommended by a manufacturer, it has cause and reason. Otherwise honda would have run a thinner oil. Using a thin oil, always makes the gears mesh nicely when the box is cold, however once the gearbox heats up, the oil thins out, thus escaping bearings, which will cause more friction, more friction equals more heat, more heat equals metal expansion, metal expansion equals more load on bearings and shafts as well as an increase of gearbox temp, all adding to premature wear and possibly a potential failure.

Best you use whats recommended. Most don't have box issues running OEM gearbox fluid, unless you go F/I.

Front cut + box + diff, based in Brisbane.

I know Tamay needs a diff, and you need a box.......

I know exactly where the shop is so if you wanna give them a call see what they say I can have a look at it for you if you like?

I also know the OzH member who imported it on my MSN ; but it looks like he's sold the front cut and stuff to these guys.

I just bought a box on ebay for $260.

It has damage at the output end and no word on it otherwise.

We'll see if it's salvageable. I want it for some electrical experiments.

What are your plans? AP2 internals?

Nah, two separate projects.

I want to make up an adaptor plate for an electric motor.

and

Solenoid activated gear change for paddle shift gearbox.

That's what happened to me I shifted to quick and in stead of the wheels chirping I heard a huge bang instead  lost 2nd gear comletely crusied it home in 3rd I have found a few very good low km gearboxs I just don't have $2000+ to spend on one and my bloody diff is noisy too after a night at Calder park so I'm trying to save for a puddymod then I'll fix the car all at once untill then I'm cruising around in my sexy Hyundai excel lol

id be keen on it but heres a few reasons why

1. Cost: getting an engine, loom, computer, transmission, mounts and a tail shaft not to mention tuning and all the other bits and pieces and getting the cluster to work plus engine modifications including internals

2. Output: probably not that much more if u spend the same going FI on an F20C motor including lower comp pistons big turbo shit loads of boost etc etc
lets face it we should all know of the (USA) Red S2000 with a 2JZ Auto running 8.8 down the quarter and the (MEXICO) Red S2000 with and F20C Manual running 8.9 down the quarter so is it worth it id rather have a fast F20 honestly its GOT VTEC YO lol :P

Age, if you can get it rebuilt for 1500, you're crazy not to do that. Like new. source some heavy duty synchros and shit and shell never play up again. Maybe also learn how to double clutch....might save you some wear?

I was told by my mechanic that Redline MTL 70w80 GL-4 gear oil is the best for S2000 gear box, thin enough for smooth shifting but loaded with tons of extreme wear additives, nothing is more prefect than that.

JAP-S2K
18-03-2010, 08:56 PM
Redline does make them shift nicely, but thin oil's aren't necessarily good. O.K under normal driving conditon's, and the odd quick change here and there. But not good for circuit or where the gearbox will see high operating tempertures.

got a qoute.. $3900 all up to fix my box.. i took off all the teeth on 2nd gear.. lol worth it? bcuz the parts from honda cost 1800 alone. includes gearbox out, taken to specialist, install, then gearbox back in.. and i dun remember what else there was

You are right, Redline MTL might not be ideal for track or racing purposes, was told to use Redline super lightweight shockproof but i pass on that as my FD is use as a daily grocery getter.

ok so i finally got my gearbox rebuild

as u can c in the pictures the gears on the mainshaft got taken clean off this is the result of shifting like the world is gonna end lol as well as the missing/broken teeth on 2nd gear.

as a result the box needed a FULL reco as metal got into every nook n crany n wrecked the lot.

thanks to the good people at Hondworld they supplied and fitted all new genuine :honda: parts $2650 later :(

so well see how we go this time around

thanks to every one that helped me try to find parts and gearboxes it was much appreciated

* Next up Stage 2 puddymod diff with 4.30gears and fittment of my new Hardrace drive shaft spacers :) *
