hey guys,

just got a question about the physical structure of the engine bay, in regards to the possible purchase of a eg-civic hatch.

in one example;
1. ive noticed some slight cracks within the bay itself (unsure whether its paint or metal, but appears to be above the metal surface), esp in the joins/lines/seams around the base of the strut tower
2. what appears to be a chunk of brick-like/plaster material (definately above the metal surface) missing on the drive side of the bay near the fender between the headlight and strut tower (where the air filter points).

was wondering if there is some sound-deadening or thick material layer applied on top of the metal in the engine bay that may have been cracked/chipped, or if these cracks may actually be structural?

also was wondering what the appearance of normal undamaged strut towers looked like, as in this example, these appear thin, uneven in character and possibly painted, suggesting previous repair.

any pics of bays would be great, and i might edit a pic of a bay that i can find to show the areas im talking about.

any help is much appreciated, thanks.

this picture is just an example on another bay:

the ellipse in red is the area where the chip is missing. it looks like a brick/ceramic type material above the metal.

the red line is where hairline cracks appear in what may be in the paint above the metal or within the body. a collection of these kind of lines exist below the airbox, and in the region of the brake cylinder.

these characteristics can be seen in more minor forms in other places within the bay as well.
