i have a 92 civic sedan with the jap spec d15b vti and im planning for a full conversion engine swap and auto to manual.

orignally i had in mind a b18c, got a quote from a honda specialist which my mates say is a well trusted workshop to take my car to and looks like it will be out of my budget.

So i think i will be swapping in a b16a2 however i dont know if it is a fair price to be charged or not.

The place gave me a pricing of 5 grand, is this reasonable? i forgot if the guy i talked to said if that was including labour costs or not.

Also, he told me something about i might want to get new extractors, injectors and new exhaust n brake pads something like that.

someone sorta clarify what typically he meant? i will double check with the place another time but i dont think i wanna see them twice in a day, i dont wanna be seen as another stupid honda fanboy that knows nothing about the mechanics

thanks in advance ozhonda.

IMO, 5k is alittle on the steap side for a B16a2 conversion, but then again you will also be converting from slush box to a stick. That pricing would be for the B18c2 or possibly B18c7 (depends on who you know).

Try calling around or putting a call out to back yard mechanics who've done these conversions before, it'll be cheaper.

Brakes upgrade would be a suggestion.

im not really interested in back yard mechanics because i know i will be fully assured these guys will do one of the best jobs. only thing is he was so detailed that it confused me between what needs to be done and what might want to be done. and also, i got confused what is included and what issent.

what do you think 5k for b16a2 includes in my situation when he means full conversion

"Full conversion" to me means you drop you car off, and pick it up with the new engine running. YMMV.

He mentioned the brake pads because you will want to stop faster if you can go faster. Injectors are probably not needed but you will want a full exhaust since your standard 1.5L exhaust is likely no thicker than a curtain rod.

by backyard, they r usually referring to mechanics that work for the large workshops but do the work on the side, usually on weekends or after work.
i scored my ek with b18c7 from such a guy. it was a bargain as well, got a ton of stuff on it as it was his previous track car, he just couldnt be bothered taking teh stuff off it

just because you pay someone to do something properly doesn't necessarily mean they will....

back yard mechanics may even do a better job as they wont be under pressure to do the swap as fast as possible to save costs. just my 2c

Converting auto to manual in a eg is not a drop in process. You need to weld in the gearbox bracket as they are different on the eg's or get the correct conversion mounts/brackets.

so if im interpreting this right...
you guys are saying 5k for b16a2 full manual conversion is not too bad. but not the cheapest?

Do it yourself man.

if you cant do it, learn. Once u see how easy it is, youll wonder why you ever paid for it.

But to answer your question, IMHO $5000 is too much.

last time I got prices for a 1600cc drive in drop off from a licenced workshop the cost for removal, install, exhaust, new clutch, fluid, etc was nearly 9k, this was a JDM B16B tho

dollar was lousy at the time (yen was out of control), hope that helps

its a good price imo

becuase you are doing the auto to manual swap

alot of people dont know what is involved and always say everything is a rip off because they are a tight ass
and dont know what goes into a eng conversion especialy a manual swap

normally a b16 is 3-4k so the added extra to do the auto to man is well worth it for the time and labout involved

if they arnt a honda specialist then the work shop is going to have some fun lol

honestly, sell ur eg, and with the money from that sale ($3k maybe), add it to teh $5k and look for an already done eg with b16 for <$10k, plenty around. plus u have the added benefit of having a car available straight away without having a car off the road.

true, ive thought about it that way. the only thing that is in my way of wishing to sell the car is that

1. i will have to wait for some time anyway with the time gap between transition to another car.

2. somehow i feel attached to the car cuz its JDM ULEH fully sick. its pretty rare to find the four door like mine, comes fully loaded with stock gathers sound system, in-cabin air purifier, 4 cup holders, that nice flare holder at the bottom of the passenger seat feet area which i put my handy torch in there instead ahahaha, u know, them nice features. and also that goregous SIR spolier that is hard to find unless its a crappy imitate version and the lil mudguards that give the car a extra meaty look

3. the body paint is WAY ROUGH, like i dont belive my car soley due to its paint condition will even cough up 3k, been looking at the competition and their paint quality makes mine look shit weak.

4. ive been a dick and ive braged on and on about this car somehow i feel like i should live up to it (if that makes any sense if it doesnt flame reply by all means)

so yeah, i guess i might choose to work with what i got. if all else fails i might open up the engine n have a look at the condition and do some reconditioning or something and turbo it.

this thread has shown me maybe i shouldnt get the b16, but feel free to drop any other ideas they will be greatly appreciated by me :D

thanks

Thats it. Knowing you have achieved it all by diy is a good feeling.

Buy a half cut and give it a crack ;)

Then get a mechanic to give it a check over to be safe.

nah i dont trust myself, i need to have an exact time that i can expect my car to be finished, n i cant be bothered buying a cheapo car to use for the time being cuz my ol folks will show guilt tripping disaproval without at least third party insurance. during this engine is being done, my folk will let me use their car.

got a b18 on its way, screw b16 haha
