hey all,
so i found a subwoofer off ebay. Its a JL Audio 12W1V2. Link is here (http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_subs.php?series_id=16)
Its selling for $160 with the enclosed box and is 2nd hand but looks to be in great conditions, having been used for only 9 months.
Can you guys give your 2 cents on this sub pls?
Its apparently a 300W sub. Is that important to know?
i know i still have to buy an amp, anyone tell me what kind of amp i have to get according to these subs
thanks

suggesting a w7 wont help if he's a noob user who has a budget of apparently $160ish
for a budget level sub, its alright. if its in good condition then itll be decent enough, but for not much more you could get a bunch of other budget level subs brand new. up to you.
right amp depends on the voice coil ratings.. whats impedence does the ebay one have? etc dvc 4ohm, svc 4ohm, dvc 2ohm, etc etc

the seller didnt say, just msged him. Ill post back when he replies. If he doesnt know, does it make a big difference when looking for an amp?
That sub is way over my budget. Getting a sub isnt one of my top priorities, so i just wana go with something cheap yet reasonable.
Hope i can get a good-priced amp

DC Resistance (Re): 4.101 ohm Nominal Impedance (Znom): 4 ohm

I've heard a W1 in the standard enclosure but since I'm not a dealer I will keep my comments to myself.
That said I will take this oppourtunity to offer you something from my site that might be even easier for you!

Brand new with warranty. And within your budget too.
Check them out and let me know if they look interesting to you. I know I'm plugging my products but if your a noob user I honestly think these would be more simple for you and more reliable since you will be buying brand new.

in that case you'd want an amp thats stable down to 2ohm. its possible, its only 300rms@2ohm you're lookin at, most mono amps easily have at least that.
edit: i read your post as DVC 4ohm.. looks like its a SVC 4ohm sub. what i said still applies. just look for one with roughly 300@4 now

For only $250 with genuine JL Box, it'll absolutely slaughter the W1. Be quick though as this won't last for long!

jl>boss... boss audio is crap, always has been, always will be, cheap, nasty, fire starting crap... you cant polish a turd, but you can put flames on it and chrome it = boss audio

Audiobahn car audio, "you can't polish a turd but you can chrome it then put flames on it". But yes, Boss Audio is a shit brand (not to be mixed up with "Bose"). Avoid it as it's nasty stuff.
m_euro, According to the website, it can handle 300wrms at 4ohms. In this case, you need an amp which can provide 300wrms (watts rms) @ 4ohms. Simple as that. It will pump and you will hear something but don't expect the best of the best, if you're a little curious about how it would sound why not head over to a car audio specialist shop and ask to have a listen? i'm sure they'd be more than happy to let you have a listen.
Compare it to others in your price range and you'll notice a difference. Amps are more expensive than subs, just so you know, and don't buy something simply cause it's cheap, buy something you want and like, that way you'll enjoy it more.
Lastly, try not to underpower the sub, it's ok to overpower it as you can set the "gains" on the amp, think of it as a sensitivity setting, so if you overpower your sub, just turn down the "gain" (you'd actually be turning it up but in but i said so you understand the context). If you underpower it, it's not a good idea to turn up (down on the amp) the gain as you'll notice a lot of distortion and will not be getting nice clear "doof doof" hahaha.
You can also find an amp which is say... 2channels but can be bridged to 300wrms @ 4ohms. That is also ok. Hope this helps

Dont get second hand subs, that is a no-no. You never know if they have been underpowered and burnt or overpowered and burnt. Alpine Type S, brand spanners, cheap. Im powering mine off a JBL 6 channel amp (well was - took it out) and it sounded great for the music i was listening to.

Anywhere that sells jbl should be able to get one in for you. Alpine's PDX-5 would be suitable. Any 5 or 6 channel amp will be nice.

I have use a 12W1 before, put them in a 1.1cu^ft seal enclosure, it sounds pretty good for the price. Initially it doesnt sound too good and minor lead slap, need some stuffing of polyfill.
if you want better SQ go for W6 instead of W3. W7 is good but a bit expensive.

boss audio is kinda like those cheap ass taiwan/china made amps already.
BOSE aint far from them, full of marketing talk, and for the price there are heaps of better stuffs you can get.

It was my understanding that BOSE was excellent quality gear (home) i dont know about car stuff though.

I wouldnt say BOSE is of low quality, but given the price you pay for it, you can get heaps nicer sounding equipment. However, if you want the looks and able to hide the speakers, then nothing can beat BOSE.... maybe B&O in terms of looks dept.
