1998 Prelude Vti-R is consuming 20L per 100kms.. It's blowing black smoke at idle and when VTEC kicks in the black smoke literally covers the street..
What could be the problem?

spark plugs need replacing or your car is running too rich, try changing the spark plugs and lets us know what happens.

my second guess is that the airflow meter is stuffed and letting too much petrol in? can someone confirm this?

White smoke is caused by to much oil..or water in your engine system
Black smoke is a fuel/air mixture - to much fuel or change all spark plugs and leads.
Blue smoke is primarily from internal engine wear - You don't want that
Grey smoke - not enough fuel

All fuel injected cars have a mass airflow meter! It's one of the critical elements! Check all the cables and connections around the air intake, especially where it meets with the throttle body.
Check for any diagnostics errors. You can search the forum as there is heaps of info on that.
Does your idle fluctuate or is stable? Check your O2 sensors. One is right next to the exhaust manifold and the other around your CAT.
Good luck!

Theres no AIR FLOW meter. Its a Map sensor (manifold absolute PRESSURE)

Thanks DLO01! Not ALL cars have Air Flow meters!
Can a faulty MAP sensor make the car run rich? the Car does have a short ram cold air intake and Xforce exhaust system. It only has one 02 sensor just before the Cat.. Is it suppose to have 2 O2 sensors? one before the cat and one after?

Check map sensor and also check primary O2 sensor. One of those could be worn out.

uhms maybe check 02 sensor? koz i remember after i took my engine out to change over the gearbox, i forgot to hook up the 02 senor and she was runnning very very rich, and i also had the black smoke occasionally on VTEC
