View Full Version : standard number plates
hey just wondering if you can keep standard number plates when selling a car n reuse them on another car? or if u can sell them?
Pretty sure you can't, far as I know if you deregister the car before selling you are required to hand in the plates, otherwise if you sell it registered the plates go with it. I'd double check with QLD Transport though, they might let you?

yep, you just have to do a plate swap... either to another car, or tell the RTA you want to place the ones you have on hold

Done this a few times with RTA.
Put the plates you want to keep in storage.
The cost is outrageous though just to keep/store plates.
They charge you for a years storage initially but they'll refund you the unused amount.
When I did this they made me re-register the car under different plates.
So I had to pay abit more to get new 'standard' plates on my car.
Okay cool let us know if QLD Transport do the same thing if you find out.

What you can do is get the plates "customised" which is cheaper then personalised. In your case you can put them on any car that is registered under your name only, so you can't sell the plates off. I did this years ago cost me about $150 or so.. hope this helps
thanks for the help everyone
