Hey guys just want to know common problems with 96-00 civics and what to look out for.

Been looking around, just to give you a rough indication the civics weve looked at usually have around 180kms and manual.

well first of all check the common standard things you should be checking when buying a 2nd hand car. such as Vic roads finance and accident check. secondly, ask if the car has log book history & look for exterior and interior damages such as its' paint job, body work, oil levels & color & leaks, fluids all clean and full. Also when youre driving the car, make sure the steering is straight. Thirdly, if youre looking at VTEC models, you might to give the civic abit of grunt making sure that VTEC kicks in smoothly. I have had 3 civics in my life time, EG, EK and currently an EJ8 and I can honestly say civics are the most reliable cars out of the Honda range! all my civics never missed a beat.

Good luck mate!

agreed, my honda civic hadnt been serviced for like 4-5 years and still ran smooth, now ive serviced it and it runs even better.

have a look also at the lil features the civic came with like sunroof, temperature control panel, etc. they seem to screw up because mine has haha, the on/off switch on the main window controller doesnt even work bahaha.

Yeh sweet ive had a few cars in the past. wrx etcc...
So i know what to look out for in general.
But i wanted to know more specific common problems, For example i used to have an eg and it had a input shaft bearing problem and found out it was common on civics.

So i need more input as to what can usually go wrong in these cars as opposed to looking out for problems. I want to find problems that are can commonly be found, if you get my drift...

yeah mate haha too bad the gearboxes in these rexxies are weak!! i was thinking of getting an 06 STi before I got another car (my EJ8) and my Yamaha R6.

Personally dont think there are major common problems with civics from the tip of my head, although in regards to my EJ8 i did hear a common problem was the power window module but mine seems to run smoothly fine..

by the way, what kind of civic are you after? Any model in particular?

My sisters buying a civic. im over the civics. turbo inspired now lol
But She only wants an ek model.
Theres a shitload of cxi's but only handful of gli's.
So shes looking into getting a cxi hatch tmw.

Yeh the gearboxes dont last if you dumping clutches.

*drive shaft boots, they're not a long lived part on the civic, check for tears/rips
*sump for oil dribbling on it
*power window function, ensure they go up and down with good motion and don't get snagged on the way down
*check clutch master cylinder for low level, then in the dash behind the clutch pedal at the cm piston for leaks of fluid
*check steering boots for tears/rips, if they are worn, check for play by jacking the car up on stands and moving the wheels back and forth

few other things I do check when looking for civics of this generation, but that's the basics beside the usual checks in the manual for a monthly check
