OK This goes out to all the experienced peeps out there, do i need to replace the stock retainers if im gonna rev to 7800~rpm. Im gonna grab springs, but dont know weather or not to replace the retainers - ive heard they are good for maybe 8500rpm? Any advice? Im thinking if i dont need the retainers for my goal, i'll put the money into more headwork.

Basically my goals is to work within the limits of the bottom end. I know the rods arnt strong enough to hold more then say 8000rpm. I want to gain a bit more gearing speed though, hopefully run out of rev's around the 100km mark (im currently at 94k's in 2nd gear redline) and to improve my location in the power band on shifts (stay within vtec). My comp cams 59300 is supposed to be good for 8000rpm, only looseing around 10hp max from peak power. Im gonna get the head ported/matched and polished up, maybe valve job, new springs, ubderdata to give me the new limits (and launch control). thats basically the plan..

thouights?

Would you not rather be sure for the sake of .... what???? $300 for Ti retainers?

thanks for the help guys... not..

anywasy Ti retainers are lighter but i have heard them being reffered 2 as disposible items, wearing alot quicker then standard ones. either way im going to grab them now for the sake of it. 300 is alot of money for what, maybe 300+rpm??? I might not even make power that high!

anyone experienced with d-series and revlimits?

Not sure about your SOHC But I'm pretty sure EG5 is runing a stock head and valvetrain and spinning to 8000rpm (that's on a DOHC D16A8)

d16a8 dohc or ZC stock valve train and bottom end is safe till 7800rpm

I wouldn't increase the red line too much over stock. With bigger cams, firmer springs and more rev's to handle, your stock timing belt will not last.

most factory honda motors are relaible to run about 500rpm over the factory limiter... My old Dohc ZC used to rev to 8000rpm all day every day on stock internals...

ive decided apon a 7800rpm revlimit for the time being. it should give me enough levearage to shift into the powerband every gear. i went with teh crower valvetrain (spring&retainer) witht he zex stage2 cam... it should be arriving this week. the head is going off to be ported&poliesh, matched to ported intake and exhaust manifolds, shaved a bit for good seal, along with other misc bits and peices.

bah!

i reved a stock B16A head to 9000rpm on a few occasions...

Weq, to answer your question, lighter retainers can increase RPM limit not by being stronger, but being lighter...

see what the dyno says, and if there is power past 7800 then push it, but i think your valvetrain will support it, just maybe not your oil drive gear and t.belt as mentioned...

have you inspected the bottom end at all? ie bearings?

engine is being rebuilt soon. ive just ordered cp pistons and eagle rods. the head looks nice, well put together, but i havnt had a chance to test out the power curve due to my failed ringlands!

with the rebuild, are there performance oil pumps i can get for the d? ive never heard of ppl grabing new pumps or timing belts for them. with a new turbo, this cam has been proven to make good power to atleast 8000rpm
