easiest is by valve cover color (not sure if this is a reliable way)
red means type r, black means si-vtec

second is by intake manifold, pics here are taken from yahoo auction japan so one can safely assume both types are jdm model

ITR IM kinda points up, looks shorter too.

LOL..
Rocket cover and IM can be change to look lyk a type R motor, there are alot of type r replica out there that can fit on the Vtir head.

Type R Motor should print PR3 on the head(on top of headers, near ps bracket)
JDM B18C(sir-g) should print p72 on it.

You bought ur self Skunk2 IM from jdm yard, u should straight away know if ur motor is type r or not based on the Im he sold u. If he gave you a pr3 IM and ur motor is a vtir, then it wouldnt fit.

So you can answer ur own question.

C5 is USDM, C7 is AUDM, as stated above JDM B-series are only stamped "B18C", you have to see if the head is stamped P72 or PR3 to tell the difference or just the IM.

if its got a stock intake, that's gonna be the only way to tell.
Otherwise your gonna have to pull it apart and idenfity other numbers.

The other method i beleive may work is to get the engine number & ring honda.
They can usually tell you what the motor is with the engine number

You can tell by the serial number if you know someone in Japan

I found all the info I needed Goggling :)

Not sure if the JDM B16 JDM B18 follow the same parth but below is a check list for my motor

JDM SiR ll B16A 170hp @ 7600 RPM
Serial No: 54xxxx
Head PR3-P1
Box S4C/Y21 Hydro
Motors stamp B16A (There is NO suffix (e,g, B16A2 or B16A3)

Things to ignore due to them being easy to change
Valve covers
Intake manifold

Well ya get the point

JDM P72 and JDM P73 pistons are different right?
Other than that, what else is different about the blocks other than the crank and rods?
