hey guys,
so i was doing a run in the Adelaide Hills tonight and as i went around a fairly sharp corner the whole back end of my Civic slid out. this completely shocked me coz i didnt think this was even possible in a FWD car without touching the handbreak.

my question is, do i just need new tires (mine DEFINITELY need replacing soon anyway) or is there also something else wrong or was I maybe doing something wrong??
any help would be great.

umm did you keep the car stable throughout the corner?
ie. did you suddenly break midway through the corner or suddenly floor it?

did you just put your car in neutral and coast through the corner?

did you turn the steering wheel with a sudden motion?

i hear you're supposed to keep your foot on the throttle throughout the corner to keep the rear from kicking out.. not sure about the physics behind this though.

also i'm not entirely sure if i'm driving my car right so someone correct me please

yeah i did break midway thru the corner coz i didnt realize it was that sharp (never driven that particular road before). thats when it slid out but i didnt think it would cause the back end to fly out.

Braking and you send all the force To the front of your car and lose traction in The rear hence why you slid out. Bald tyres wouldn't help the situation though either

Yeh the idea is have the right speed before you hit the corner then smooth steering through the corner and accelerate out. Hard to achieve this though if u don't know the road so always take it steady on roads unknown to you :)

have u got legal tread on ur tires?

are they old?

are they damaged?

if not then the sliding would come down to how u drive, u can over come even the best tyres by driving incorectly.

as per jks24... good information mate!

weight transfer is the issue, when you brake while the car is loaded to one side through a corner it moves the weight to the front outside corner tyre, unloading the rear, and swinging the car around

it's accentuated by chassis stiffness in the rear, ie swaybars, and for some, an advatage on the track in terms of being able to adjust trajectory to ensure the correct line through a corner

also happens if you over correct understeer.

that happened to me right before i went into the guardrail :s

the only way to correct understeer is to give it more gas, which will send you straight into a gutter/wall/fence, or to get off the gas... when you get off the gas thats when the weight transfer happens and brings the back around

"or to get off the gas... when you get off the gas thats when the weight transfer happens and brings the back around "

if that happens you gotta plant on the gas again to send the weight back to the rear. but whatever you do, dont touch the handbrake, unless you know exactly what your doing.
