Do running spacers have any negative effects on car i.e. handling, wheels.. why are they illegal?

theyre illegal cause theyre usually unsafe. unless theyre designed properly they can fail causing all kinds of nasty stuff (you can probably imagine what happens when the spacers fail) and if you get the wrong ones they cause the wheels to be mounted on the studs, and not the hub centres like they should be which is likely to cause the wheel studs to fail. unless you get properly made ones theyre very dangerous. im guessing the govt couldnt be ****ed trying to work out what 5% of the spacers are safe, so theyre blanket illegal.
