Hey, If you was to do an Engine Transplant ( VTEC ENGINE of course) and your a First Year P plater. Is there regulations and rules you need to go under? or Can you even do the engine conversion to your car?

legally you're not allowed to drive a car with modifications at all, in sydney anyway

i'm pretty sure that includes engine swaps for increased power

you are allowed to do a engine conversion but can't be any displacement, say your swapping a d16 1.6l to a b18 1.8l you will need a mod plate an it will be illegal for a p plater,
if you were doing a d16 1.6l to b16 1.6l then that should be fine not to sure if you need a mod plate for that though

You don't need an engineer's certificate unless the displacement increases by more than 15%, if you had a D16 stock then you can change to another engine with a max displacement of 1840cc's before you needed an engineer's certificate.

Law might be different interstate.
But yes, Sydney no need for engineer's certificate going from 1.6 to 1.8 or 1.8 to 2.0

But do require if going from 1.6 to 2.0 or 1.8 to 2.2 or 2.0 to 2.4 etc.

save the risk and buy yourself a Vtec stock car, (EGvti, or ek4 etc etc)

Oh ok, Thanks guys :) so that means I can Get an An engine transplant while on P's. I just need the right engine or Get a Modification/engineering Certificate right?

also...you dont need a mod plate if its a stock option for that car...eg b16a in ek1. regardless of any other thing...

Depending on which state you're in, in QLD you can't drive a car with a mod plate (which you need for any engine transplant) and in NSW you can't drive a car with any mod that requires an engineering certificate (any major mods/engine transplants >15% displacement etc. etc. )

i know that in SA it's illegal to put an engine in a car that is bigger than the biggest option availible for that car from factory. eg. u can put anything bigger than a 1.6 into a civic, no bigger than 2.2 for a prelude, etc.

To clarify. It has nothing to do with displacement or power output up to 200kw.

From the Qld transport website since it refers to you:


High-powered (performance) vehicle restriction

High powered (performance) vehicle restrictions apply for the duration of P1 and P2 licence periods for licence holders under the age of 25 years.

These restrictions also apply to probationary licence holders who return from a disqualification to a P1 or P2 probationary licence, where at the time of the offence they were under 25 years of age. These limits apply for the duration of the probationary period regardless of age.

High powered (performance) vehicles include those with:

- eight or more cylinders
- a turbo-charged or super-charged engine that is not diesel powered
- an engine that has a power output of more than 200 kW as per the manufacturer's specifications
- a rotary engine that has an engine capacity of more than 1146cc as per the manufacturer's specifications
- a modified engine that must be approved under the Transport Operations (Road Use Management — Vehicle Standards and Safety) Regulation 1999, section 30.

This means that you can't legally drive a car with a LA coded mod plate. Read this (http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/pdf/NCOP3_Section_LA_Engines_3Feb2006.pdf) link for the national legislation on engine modifications.


Section 1.1
MODIFICATIONS NOT REQUIRING CERTIFICATION

• Fitting a replacement new, used or reconditioned engine.
• Fitting a manufacturer’s optional engine for that same model vehicle.
• Fitting replacement original equipment (or equivalent) engine & exhaust components.

In all of the above cases, if the engine is modified, it must be certified under the relevant Approval Code.

Section 1.2
MODIFICATIONS REQUIRING CERTIFICATION UNDER LA APPROVAL CODES

• Fitting equivalent engines (within 20% of original power and engine weight).
• Fitting performance engines.
• Modifying engines and engine components.

Manufacturer optional engines for that same model also means it has to be an Australian delivered model, as only then has the engine passed factory Australian design rule compliance in that vehicle. If didn't come with factory ADR compliance then it will require independent ADR approval. Which is a mod plate.
So the only engines you can stick in an EK without needing a LA coded mod plate are D16's and B16's. And as someone already said, it'd be cheaper to just buy an EK4 than swap in a B16.
