ill be purchasing a new car soonish either to go for vti-r integra or either find a eg civic with a b18 in it.
im wondering what basic mods i can do to the engine side of it to get abit more potential out the engine.

Are you in queensland ? If you are then the EG with B18 is a no go. This would require a mod plate for the car to be able to get registered. And a mod plate pretty just sums that the car is modified.

Just get an Integra with I/H/E + tuned Hondata chip. And some other stuff and you'll also be pulling 13s

that vti-r has basically exhaust, intake, headers,manifold and type r cams and springs.
is there any after market cams that would be eqully or better then the type r cams? brands?

my suggestion is to get a cold air intake (CAI) plus a good exhaust system dont go any bigger then a 2.25"

then do the handling (shocks,springs,struts) dont go ebay cheap on your suspension you will regret it, also keep the car as light as you can:D

in the end it will be a much funner car to drive, good luck
