The prices change per dealer.

Yours is actually pretty expensive, i payed $9.20 for 1ltr of blue coolant. $6.70 for the 500mL brake fluid and $13.64 for 1L power steer from my dealer.

FYI quotes were from VIC Honda Dealers from Collingwood and Westside (Hoppers Crossing)
I was curious whether they differed in prices hence why i called two dealerships.
Both gave me the exact same prices.

Your prices from NSW does sound cheap.

I bought 3 bottles of coolant for $45 each last week from the dealer in Newcastle. Sticker lied - labeled ~$60.

For the few extra dollars involved, surely you wouldn't totally dismiss Honda when they say to use only genuine power steering fluid?

well its a 95 civic. and the penzoil has awards and stuff noted on it. im not too sure whether power steering fluid improved performance as say motor oil might. to me, its one of them homogenous items where they are all pretty much the same, like window cleaning fluid

You might be right. I'm happy to pay the extra couple of dollars (once in my 5 years driving Hondas) for genuine PS fluid. The manual specifically states that leaks might form if you don't use OEM fluid. It doesn't say the same thing about using OEM oil, or even transmission fluid, so I doubt it's entirely an exercise in marketing. If it is, they fooled me :)

I think for the most part, with similar products, it's all about marketing. Sure, some might perform better in certain cars in certain conditions but for the most part it's a case of good enough
I mean it's not like ugly chicks vs hot chicks, unless u have a thing for ugly chicks

My point was that PS fluid is one of the few things that Honda specifically says to use OEM only. Why not go all out and say to only use OEM everything or else your car will fall apart. Like I said above, for the extra $5 per couple of years, it's not a gamble worth even discussing. I'm talking about longevity rather than performance.

I've read somewhere that using non OEM power steering fluid in Honda's corrodes the pump leading to early failure? I'm not sure how true it is but yes, Honda does specifically say you must use OEM for power steering fluid and that's what I do too - I'm not going to risk it to save only a few dollars. If it fails, then that'll be expensive!

Cool, near my work. I need to get PS fluid soon, so was thinking of Trivett.

From my experience in Brisbane, the prices from dealer to dealer can vary quite a bit. If you are prudent (or tight-arsed, as I am), ring around and see who gives you the best price. Just call and say "How much do you charge for XXXX?".
