Hello all,

I have a question in regards to my DC2R. When I start the engine the oil light stays on for about 2-3 seconds and the valve train is noisy however after those 2-3 seconds the oil light goes off and the valve train quieten downs.

Is this some what acceptable and can anything be done to rectify / diagnose it?

Some info regarding the vehicle:

2000 DC2R
Completely Stock no mods.
93,000KM with full service history with oil changed at 5,000KM intervals.
Oil used is Mobil1 Syn 5w-50 with Genuine Honda Oil Filter.
The car doesn't get driven or started for up to 3-5 days at times... I have started it for 3 days consecutively in the morning and same senario. Sometimes after driving it, I've started it several hours after and the light stays on a little but flickers more so and the valve train isnt as noisy if not at all.

Thanks in advance...

natural however it is somewhat of a concern it flickers; how is the oil level? could be a potential partial blockage of the oil pick up filter, low oil pressure but probably not I'm only stating some extreme down the line suggestions

The flicker is only on starting after it's been run previously the same day then stays off... Oil level is on the top mark of the dip stick. I was thinking of taking the sump off and checking the oil pickup. If I do this how can I check the oil pump and regulating valve? Is the oil I've used too thin? I was thinking of moving to a 10w-40 rating.

My daily driver (99 CXI Civic) after being left for days untouched, upon start up the light goes off immediately with no valve train noise and has 183,000KM on the clock.

Thanks for replying.

Just thought, is it possible oil is draining back out of the oil filter? Isn't there some kind of anti drain valve built into filters?

its normal for the lamp to be on for a second or 2 at start up as oil is being picked up and building pressure.

its also normal for your engine to be a little bit more noisy during start up as there is less oil in the head head to protect the valve train.

edit: i might also like to add that even though it wont make much diffrence to cold start, 5w-50 may be a little thick for a sub 100k b18c

might want to try 5w-30 or 10w-30 or if ur engine is abit smokey try 5w-40 or 10w-40.

generally,

thinner oil is more efficent, better flowing but offers less protection under harsh conditions (but thats not to say a good thin oil wont offer sufficent protection),

thicker oil is better for older motors with worn seals. pros are engine runs quieter/smoother and offers better protection under high stress environments (ie. track),

I reckon the problem is with the viscosity oil you use.

use what is recommended for your car.

5w-50 is definitely not recommended

try the 5w-30 and see how you go, if u are burning abit of oil and finiding you have to top up, move onto 10w40 at the next service.

you can also get Royal Purple in 5w30

get royal purple if u got abit of cash to spare, if not then castrol edge will do just fine

woowww way to thick.. i got 97,000kms in my dc2r and use honda feo 10-30w i might try 10-40w motul full syn nxt though.
tbh i think 5-30w is too thin wen cold

don't you mean too thin when hot.....

you want it to be less viscous when cold

It's simple guys - read your car's manual and follow the instructions. It doesn't matter what you "think" (regarinding oil viscosity).

I've ordered some Royal Purple 10w-30, should be here this week. I'll post my results soon after...
