View Full Version : Dying / crazy idle after valve lash

did a serch and didnt come up with anything. lately my engines been ticking like crazy so i decided to have a go at adjusting the valve lash.. engine is a b18c and adjusted the intake to 0.006 and exhaust to 0.007 (they were out and all around the 0.011 mark)

before continuing my iacv isnt working and is trowing a CEL, this has been like this since i put the engine in and the idle has been low but i have adjusted it at the tb to sit around 500 - 1100 depending where it wants to sit at whatever time.

but now after i did the valve lash the car will die at idle some times unless i make sure the throttle is at 1000. i found the problem worse this morning when it was cold.

i followed this thread on team integra http://www.team-integra.net/sections/articles/showArticle.asp?ArticleID=485

although i didnt get a chance to do it when it was 100% cold, i had the car sit for about 2 hours with no rocker cover before i touched it.

thanks for any advice in advance guys

i just reread the write up and i did a different order.. instead of 1 3 4 2 i did 1 4 3 2... adjusting the lash of each cylinder at TDC, could this cause such a big problem? i assume it wouldent because the pistons were at tdc each time

OMG.JAI xD

Easiest way to do valve adjustments is turn the motor, watch the cam rockers, when both your intake and exhaust cam is rocking that is the end of your exhaust cycle and the start of your compression, follow the firing order, and the next one ready to fire will be at BDC and cams are at its lowest point.

ie. If rocker 1 is rocking. you adjust rocker 3. When rocker 3 is rocking you adjust 4. When 4 is rocking you adjust 2.

Valve adjustment wont effect idle greatly unless its out by heaps or there is no clearance at all.

Since you did it at 1432 i think youll find that you have excessive clearance at 4 and 3. better recheck and re do it. Excessive tappet clearance can destroy your head drivetrain. Always do it when its cold. Even waiting 2 hours you may have .001-.005" difference cause its still warm. If you do it when its warm try to close it up a bit more than specified. Not by much. But enough to compensate.

The guide you read isn't very helpful.
For a start, they're measuring the clearence in the wrong spot... :p
Use one of these....
14186
http://www.amazon.com/Alltrade-648827-2-Inch-Valve-Adjustment/dp/B0002Q8TU0
Set the clearence to 0.006"(0.15mm)Intake & 0.007" (0.17mm) Exhaust.
Spend the time & get them all exactly the same...
But be sure to check the clearance between the rocker & the top of the valve.
(Under where you are adjusting)
Not between the cam & the rocker arm like the retards in the thread you linked!

Re TDC... Stuff that crap... Use your brain & stop being a robot.
Get a 1/2 drive ratchet with a 19mm deep socket on the end of the crank,
With the rocker cover off, rotate the crank untill the cam lobes are 180deg opposite the rocker arms...
(Basicly pointing up, approx 15~20deg off vertical) don't worry about the bottom end & TDC, look at the cam.
Work your way around the head & get the all done, rotating the crank after each IN/EX pair is completed.
If your memory is shot, an Artline text is your friend. ;) (Just mark em once you're done)

Rev IACV CEL...
Check your wiring, chances are you've torched your IAT sensor & have the IACV plug fitted to that & visa versa.
Check your knock sensor too... 1 wire only...
Once your CEL is sorted & IACV is working properly, you'll have a lot less greif.

Hope that helps

Thank heaps for the informative post will surely read it through again when i tackle the job later on this morning

lol at not measuring the clearance in the right place, will defiantly use the spot you mentioned in your post this time.
and also i wasnt using a proper jam nut tool but a modified 10 spanner and a flathead screwdriver... its not pretty but did work. although to save more headache i will just go and buy one of the proper tools to make life a little easier.

had a look and finding it near impossible to get the gap between the valve and rocker? any insight on how its done would be awesome

Cheers

You may need to bend them just a touch more than they are already, then you're laughing.
