View Full Version : Rims Buying Help - CL9
Neesmo31
25-05-2010, 08:30 PM
Hey all - basically thought i would make a dedicated thread to help me purchase the right set of rims for my CL9.
I would like 18's preferably, def not 19's or bigger. 16's look tiny, so yeah i think 18's would look really nice.
I am also going for the luxury look over sporty, so something with a tiny bit of dish would be suitable.
Can people please help me out by maybe posting pics of their CL9's, with a side shot of their rims and label what rims they are, size, offset, width, tyre profiles and sizes and also if you have dumped it, how much drop please.
In advance, your help is muchly appreciated. Thank you.

just got my rims on saturday =D they're Work Seeker CX measuring 18" x 8" +45 (i think) fronts and 18" x 9" +67 rears... had to get 8mm spacers for rears to clear the suspension and the offset is a bit high for the rears coz they came off my mates s2k. car is unlowered atm tho so it doesnt look too good for now

Say if i go down the path of either 18's or 19's, with low king springs, will i need new shocks, camber adjustment and all those ongoing issues??? If alot of parts need to be changed then i will probably leave it stock then... Im not going rediculously low or anything.

28-05-2010, 12:22 PM
how low do kings springs go? when i had ebiach springs i cant remember how low they went (roughly $500) but it went really well with my stock shocks, i didnt use a camber kit it didnt really affect my tyres as long as u rotate them evern 5000kms i dont think it sould be an issue,

Did you have to do much guard work ?
yeh, removed inner lining all round, rears have been rolled and pulled, pulled the rear bumper off and shaved the arch lip right down and cut off the tab that hold the bumper to the rear quarter, fronts have been rolled and pulled, rears are very flush, you can fit a credit card between the tyre and the guard but thats about it.... fronts are a bit sunken though, need a camber kit and some 10mm bol on spacers and it'll look much better
Neesmo31

Yeah - while your car looks insane, i couldnt have it that low, or modify it that much. I dont want to go down the whole modifying path again and all that. Especially the roads around here arnt perfect so yeah...

The king springs should be between 20mm - 40mm I think. There are 2 or 3 different types you can get

Just a thought, say i wanted to keep stock rims but lower it to 100mm maximum road height, would eibach or kings suffice? Or would i need a coilover to acheive that height?

Hmm after alot of research i think I would like to buy coilovers as they might be the way to go. I have heard alot of good things about the Teins on euro's, my question is, with coilovers installed, can i soften them up enough to make it feel stock again?
I really dont want to tear bushes out or deform the steel (i have heard anything around 10 kilo spring rates can deform the metal of the car rather than flex the shocks/springs) So people running the tein SS, good or bad reviews?
Just want to do something to the car come tax time... In saying that though i have seen the SS's retailing at $2400!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i run tein ss on my car. Its pretty comfortable and simlar to stock, but it is slightly stiffer compared to stock. If you want a soft setup very similar to stock, have a look at eibach prokit with koni shocks so that you can also play around with the height slightly.
Regarding pricing, i got my tein's for almost half the price, but that was a few years ago. PM edw-R, he is a super efficient trader (or used to be) and very very trustworthy. The coilovers from him are JDM and so it wouldnt be covered by warranty in australia...but at almost half the price, i wouldnt mind :)

Thanks mate, arnt the jap spec teins set up differently to the aus spec ones? Also how can you height adjust with the eiback/koni setup? Do the konis have threaded sections with an adjustable spring base?

Excellent - did you have any problems with scraping gutters, below legal height, wheels rubbing on guards and whatnot?? Also what size are those tyres??
And are the buddy clubs a nice coilover? - would be looking for something as close to stock stiffness.

Very few coilovers are close to stock stiffness. Almost all of them are stiffer than stock and buddyclub is quite stiff.

I have read that the Teins can be quite tame if adjusted like so.

It was pretty low. The back did scrape coming out of my driveway but I got those stupid driveways with the lip on them. I had to raise the fronts to that height cause they were scraping but the back guards were rolled no issue there. Still legal height (in NSW). They weren't that bad. But definatley not anywhere near stock. as aaronng said. The tyres are 225/40/18 with ? offset.

Depends which ones. Tein SS on the Euro is still stiffer than stock but not overly stiff. I have Tein Flex and they are hard.

neesmo31 has been struck by the mod bug :p
I recall seeing your post abt keeping the euro as a daily and keeping it stock. Then you thought about rims, now looking into sussy lol....exactly the same as what i did to the car.
Before you know it, you'd done much much more than you anticipated :D

Haha I always do that. I had a EP3R and said that I would do just a couple of things. I had spent $6,500 in 12 months. lol. I know that isn't much compared to what others spend but it was much more than expected.

Nah, I reckon the Eibach prokit with Koni yellows can actually be a bit stiffer than the Tein SS at softest damper settings. The Eibach + Bilstein combo seemed a bit more comfy than the Eibach + Koni Yellows.

I know i know!!!!!!!!!!! My housmates put bets on for how long it would take me to mod it. I just want rims though, or something to set it apart from a nana spec euro. And the easiest mods are rims and lowering it, but reading into it more theres shocks and camber issues and all sorts of hidden fun stuff. Grrrr....
snYpz
01-06-2010, 07:15 PM
well do rims, suspension and rear camber kit. Its not tooo expensive, and the car would look alot better. Dont just go cheap on sussy and go king springs with stock shocks, you'll probably end up spending more in replacing parts.
If i were you, i would go sussy and save on rims, go with euro sport 17's and give it a nice drop. Otherwise, drop the car first then rims. Aftermarket rims on stock sussy on the euro looks weird....trust me, i know cos i thought i was ONLY just gonna go aftermarket rims lol..then sussy to complete the stance and.....the rest is history =) hahhaha

The sad reality for euro drivers :( if you're thinking about rims sooner or later you'll realise it'll look retarded without a drop. You'll think about doing just springs, but then realise that if you do that you'll probably end up needing new shocks, which means you might as well have just gotten coilovers in the first place haha :(
snYpz
01-06-2010, 07:25 PM
^ it may be sad, but the euro is such a beautiful car. Yes it lacks torque and power, but it has enough to put a grin to your face! =D
Neesmo, go tein ss or eiback springs with koni yellow/bilstein shocks (PM tony1234, he has eibach springs with bilstein shocks and he loves them). Go rims and suspension and maybe a lip kit later, and you'll LOVE the car so much more. I have had random people mention how nice the car looks, and i dont really know them either :)...i say do the basic mods nessmo31, you wont regret!

thye're the more commonly used coilovers. The good thing about teins is that they can be rebuilt. N+ gve u more drop in the rear, but they cant be rebuilt. N+ have stiffer spring rates. Both brands are of high quality and the more popular coilovers. However, there is also tein basics if u want cheaper. Similar to tein SS but without dampening adjustment, which isnt that important if you're not tracking. I hardly ever change my settings.

Be careful with FD2R rims. The offset is quite high, something like +60 or so. So the rims don't really sit flush with the fender.

The stock rims sit too far in to look good. So even if you want for wider tyre like a 225 one, that would only sit 10mm further out than stock. Looks ok for the front, but shit on the rear!

Neesmo, DONT DO IT! SELL UR CAR AND GET A DC5R!!!! hehe
However, if you still want to mod the euro... here is some advice and some snapshots of what I have done.
1. Once you do one thing, it leads to another!! eg. Rims -> coilovers -> rear camber kit -> Body Kit -> MOAR PWR! Set aside a plan of how much you want to spend, or you will end up 7k down wondering how your rims led to all of these things!
2. Buy once and buy right. Simple and self explanatory. It may seem exaggerated to spend 2k on coilovers and a rear camber kit, but wasting a couple of hundred on el cheapo stuff + install is gonna be annoying when ur car feels crappy to drive. Which ultimately leads to buying the expensive stuff anyway... save yourself the time, money and effort and do it right the first time.
3. If you're not comfortable to do an install yourself, get it done somewhere with a good reputation! Cannot stress this enough!!!!!! I have once driven away with my front right suspension not bolted to the car... I have also driven 10m with my back right wheel not bolted on!!!!!!!
4. Listen to Aarong.... he is always right!
My setup: Buddyclub N+ coilovers, fn2r wheels, ingalls rear camber kit, whiteline Rear Sway bar, Cusco front Strut bar.
I can only comment on what I have got. So here I go:
It all began the same as everyone else who owns a euro and decides to mod it... "The wheels are small and that gap is stupid". Here is a photo of the car just after I got it:
http://imgur.com/KmDHh.jpg
I decided on the FN2R wheels cos I thought they would look cool. I also decided to keep the original black "H" centre wheel caps and put them into the FN2R wheels, because Red and Purple do no go well together! And as you can see, the car looks like a CRV:
http://imgur.com/0JVeh.jpg
So now it was time to drop the car.. I decided on the buddyclubs as ppl said they were good, and they were cheaper than the tein SS. After I got them installed, I set the damping to about the middle (between hard and soft) and was shocked that it was soooo soft! I mean, it was as soft as stock! (Thanking jebus I had bought adjustable suspension) I ended up just clicking the suspension to its stiffest! And it was THE BEST $2,000 I spent!!! The car handled amazing afterward! And as you can see, it looked better too:
http://imgur.com/Cb4wT.jpg
After some time with the car at that height, it became annoying when I would scrape on almost everything. It also almost made me cry when I went over a one way speed bump thing (the ones with the tyre spikes if you drive the wrong way) and heard the undercarriage of the car get the shit scraped out of itself. So (thanking jebus again that I bought adjustable coilovers) I raised the height just a little bit:
http://imgur.com/ChyBd.jpg
After all of this, I got the Rear Sway Bar which did amazing things for the cars turn in, and I also got the cusco front strut bar which really stiffened up the front end.
Overall, I am super happy with the look and the feel of my car and I would recommend the setup to anyone with a euro!
Simonnn has also been in my car and adores the way it handles! He can verify that my car feels like its on rails...
So to conclude all of this... Mod your car and have fun doing it!

Thank npcan2. Nice writeup. Yeah i sold my dc2r because of that reason, spending too much money on it. (which i said i would never spend a dime on that car) Before that it was well over $10,000 just modifying my skyline.
I bought mine stock with the intentions of keeping it that way. But i at least want something to make it look good or to set it off.
I heard the N+ are very stiff from other members?
And yeah i do all my own work, i am really thinking of giving the pedders XA's a go with ingalls arms on the rear first up, just to drop it a bit. Thats all i really want. I m not going to track the car, never thrash my car (didnt even do that with my dc2r) dont want good handling, just adjustability. My thoughts is that even though pedders arnt a mix of raw cut diamonds sprinkled on bilstein shocks, it will be better (and newer) than standard.
Tax time will probably see these and a some new toys lol. Thanks.

22-06-2010, 06:35 AM
Damn cars though, you cant escape the mod bug. Never.
Research tells me that stock spring rates are:
F - 5kg
R - 3.1kg
Now even pedders are:
F - 12kg
R - 6kg
Ksport are:
F - 12.1kg
R - 7.2kg
Buddyclub are (i think):
F - 12kg
R - 6kg
Is there any coilover that would go somewhere in between? Basically all these coilovers are double the factory rates. We dont have the best roads up here....

Went for a ride in a EK with Tein SS's and surprisingly it was a softer, smoother ride than my Euro as it is standard. Even when we stiffened the shocks up to nearly all the way i would say the difference in mine to his was very similar. Weird.

Nice.. very clean. Got me inspired there :D
I'm looking at going with a darker, brushed metal grey 18" for my silver CL9. Just wondering how practical those Buddyclubs are for everyday use though?

To be honest, buddyclub n+ is a street spec, and they feel as such. They are really not that stiff..
In saying that, compared to stock, they are stiff on the stiffest setting. But when they are put on the softest setting, I would say they are softer than stock.
Thats the beauty of adjustability!

Just wondering how much are those wheels worth? I imagine a bit since they are off the type r. I like the look of them on the euro

I have seen them advertised here for around 1500 for bare rims. I have been looking at a set of FD2 sport rims, 17" 45 offset i beleive. I think that will be a bit more of a nice offset than the 60 for the fd2r rims? Ill try and get these coilovers ordered today - wondering if i should order my ingalls at the same time?? (rear camber and toe) probably should - i plan on dropping it 2.5 - 3 inches, see how it is with that height, than raising it up if it gives me any trouble.
Maybe shout it some new plugs and oil, not that it needs it but i like to overmaintain lol.

Good on ya. Your car is like your liver -- take care of her..and she takes care of you :D
So you're going with 17"? Dont mean to hijack ur post but Im facing that same dilema now.. looks like if you go 18", you'd definitely need to drop the car. But if you go with 17"s..can you still look good with stock suspension? Anyone here on that configuration?
Would be great to see some pics. Here's my 'blank canvas' atm

I dont think that stock euro suspension will look good with any wheels, hence why i am going the coilovers straight up. It still should look okay lowered on stockies (going for that retro look lol) and when time and money permits then i will look for some rims.
Since im going coilovers im trying not to go too big on the wheels as i want to keep some sidewall profile to lower bumpyness.

For your reference, I just put 18 inch Work CR Kais on my euro today. Looks less CRV-spec than I expected (As I'm still on stock shocks/springs), but it could be because my bodykit makes the car look lower!

Thanks guys, nice choice in rims, the bronze is a nice offset to the graphite. With adjusting the height of the buddy clubs, do you have to unbolt them to adjust height? Just from the little pics that i have seen of them they appear that way. I will investigate furthur upon getting the goods!

Yay my N+ turned up today (thank you JDM yard for prompt service) and will put them in tonight or tommorow night. One question though, all the spring perches are loose and lower assembly is as well.
Now I will back all the perches off, (doing one shock at a time) tighten the upper perch till it seats onto the spring, give it another one full turn to capture the springs fully, then lock them up with the locking ring.
I will do all 4, then recheck heights and recheck again if nessesary. Then its on the car and adjust....
Have I got this setup for the coilly's correct?? My understanding is that you dont want to alter the spring rate by "squishing" the springs up.
Another thing, whats the easiest way to alter ride height once coilovers are installed?? You basically have to pull them half out of the car to adjust as you have to rotate the lower section?
Thanks all.
