Hi guys!

I thought it would be good to start the Official Thread What did you do to your EK today :honda:

That way members who are not working on a build, can post those sometimes big, small, good, not so good, funny or just out right annoying things that happen during the day :p

I think we can make this a great thread for the OzHonda community!

stupid thing happened, went to shopping centres, underground parking, the freaking side curbs are ridiculously high, and roads narrow as, so as i went to turn around a bend, poof!, run over the curb, pulled over, looked, a massive gutter rash!!!! and on closer inspection, a chunk of rubber has ripped off :S, so pissed!!!

never driving underground parking again >:(

If you dont mind me asking how did u manage to polish the heatshield and get a really nice result like that?

Mullensxxx

start with a low grit and keep going to 1000 or higher then a nice metal polish, its easy as, obviously gonna be harder if its in crap condition

i actually used a polishing buffer head attachment on a normal drill press. But you will need different polishing compounds depending on what condition it's in.

My heatshield hadn't been done since the car was new, so it was a bit messy... so what i started with was the different polishing compounds (like the ones below) - the brown compound gives it the once over and removes the dirt/debris, while the green one actually polishes it.

After that, best to use a metal polish (Autosol Metal Polish - good sh#t made in Germany lol) to finish it off!

was two days ago but still. I wired up my knock sensor ran a new wire from the knock sensor to the ecu was a massive job since the knock sensor is under the intake manifold! and i had no plug for it so i customized my own :D took me a total of 3-4hours x_X and a very very sore hand since theres no room.

HA, yeh i feel so cruel revving the daylights out of my little D16Y4 lol... it barely sees over 4,500 rpm! From a mechanical point of view, I don't want to kill my engine... if only i had a B series... arrr :)

sangyz
04-07-2010, 11:16 PM
whats wrong with reving over 4,500 on a d16?

Alvis
04-07-2010, 11:22 PM
don't know...i guess it's because i know it's not a Type R engine and i'm worried about doing damage with the extra stresses...

sangyz
04-07-2010, 11:29 PM
doesnt matter if its a b series or d series both can rev high well any engine can but theres a rev limiter installed to protect any damage done to the engine so nothing to be worried about

Alvis
04-07-2010, 11:35 PM
i have to admit, on the odd occasion when you do give it the beans, you do realise how much is up high in the rev range; but just don't like to push it everytime i drive it; for everyday driving guess you just need to keep in key torque zone... but hopefully a b series one day :)

sangyz
04-07-2010, 11:43 PM
haha even with a b series you would drive it exactly how you would drive a d series. exactly the same only when giving it one is when you'd rev to the red line ;].

Its not like with a d series you would change gears a 3k and with a b series you would change at 4.5 lol its the same pretty much haha

SuperJDM.

mugen_ctr
05-07-2010, 12:40 AM
lol, us D-series are alrite, only thing sucks was that driving to Winton race way, i was cruisin constantly at 3.2k, using average 10liters per 100kms.... 110kph zone, didnt know it would drain the fuel tank so fast!

But hey, jus aslong as the motor runs, an gets from point A to B, than its all good..

EK1.6LCIV
05-07-2010, 08:28 AM
goes over 7k with ease, havent damaged a thing in mines 3oo,oookms of use :) they respond well to a beating :)
(oil gets changed at 5k, with the best full syn in existance, gearbox oil every 40k)

needs some more seals replaced, new clutch from exedy, new flywheel, rear main seal whilst Im there, inspect the oil pump (might just replace it whilst I do the sump gasket)

Alvis
05-07-2010, 08:54 AM
Oh wow, gee Honda engines must be tough, but good thing ur onto the regular maintenance - i didn't know manuals had specific gearbox oil - isn't that just autos? (unless ur an auto driver lol)

EK1.6LCIV
05-07-2010, 09:29 AM
very very tough, hell the clutch lasted 300,oookm, got hot at the drags, cooled off and works just fine again with the slightest slip lol
I really do love this engine and everything attached to it, just does as it's told with no bs ever lol

manuals have specific oil, just honda manual transmission fluid, does well and is pretty cheap :)

... launching it down the strip and still going at 300k+ clicks farq that's one tough piece of hardware. It's interesting to search You Tube on people trying to blow up Honda engines lol - makes me cringe because the engines just take it and they seriously don't give up! It's insane!

EK1.6LCIV
07-07-2010, 08:25 AM
its only been to the strip a few times, prob not the place for any stock honda, pressure plates get bloody warm, best advice if anyone wants to go to the strip regardless of power is to invest in a custion button clutch, a lightened flywheel while youre paying for the box to come off and you're set :)

on the street however, nothing has broken apart from the driveshaft boots, the only thing I don't like about them, I'd easily break one a year (small collection of driveshafts now as they're cheap to get)

you'll probably find most of BPs petroleum in the Gulf of Mexico - needless to say it's pretty bad and could cost the company $3bn+! Could be all over for BP think i'd convert to Shell now... to give you an idea check this out:

Tell me about it, how crazy - it was because I parked in a No Stopping area (unknowingly, not on purpose or anything). But i've written a letter to get a pardon because

1. the parking meter was not in between the parking signs - been told by local RTA member they need to be within parking signs to be legal. Can anyone confirm they've heard the same?

2. the parking directions were on a power pole and not on a designated street sign unlike the one across the road (also heard this is now illegal); so i've sent photos in as to why i had no chance of even seeing the sign because it was out of view because i actually turned across the road before the power pole so had no chance of seeing it:

No chance of seeing sign when approaching from other side of road and turning before power pole:

How it should be marked like the one across the road - then I'd have no excuses about seeing it + parking meter within designated signpost area:

- Did you reset ECU after changing back to stock airbox?
- You should use thinner oils in winter like 5 or 10 -30.
- Big wheels are obviously heavier and will burn more fuel to move, rubber specs are a bit weird, most ppl would use 40 or 45 profile.

I get 600 to a tank on 98 driving sensibly, even non sensibly it clears 540 with ease :)

I do buy dear oil for mine after watching them prove some other critics wrong in a show overseas, but whenever I take off the cover to see when they do the belt service it still looks as it did at 100k. Good oil and oem radiator fluid is the best insurance to have. I'm keen to see how it goes running 5psi and 35 spray

been told for my purposes (occasional drags) that this design will be suffice on my driveline and I've been keen on the flywheel for a long time, it's taken over 250,000ks for this clutch to die, been waiting for this day like a passion, heck Hondas doing it all as most shops I speak to all are expensive (oh it's a Honda, they're fidley to work on, etc etc lol) gets old that talk, can't wait for the old timer mechs to die off or retire and be replaced with more spirited, competitive shot callers (one guy said my cross member had to be removed for them to get to the clutch and it would take 9hours lol)

cheapest is from the USA (racing organic clutch and fidanza flywheel) but really would rather a local guy for the warranty of the parts

but were fixing alot of gear going to be one of the dearest services I've run into:

rear main
sump gasket (I think the pan is offset in one point, just changed it, still leaking...)
oil pump (closer to 300k service, I can't be stuffed removing the oil sump again lol)
crank seal

prob around 2k, then she'll be ready for the next stage if I choose to pursue

cool.... i guess ill wait a little longer till the clutch starts slipping, atm its still fine, still bites fine, im jus wondering, cause the mech last time he checked advised i should soon, something like 30 percent meat left..... i dont like drag racing, cause its slow, but rather chuck it around some corners, to get the blood rushing, :D
Mech advised also, go with exedy, warranty an all.... but is happy 2 chuck in other clutches so long as they fit, lol

for a car thats done more than 250,000kms, thats pretty good... the seals should be giving way by than anyways, usual wear and tear.... happened to my oldmans camry...

- Did you reset ECU after changing back to stock airbox?
- You should use thinner oils in winter like 5 or 10 -30.
- Big wheels are obviously heavier and will burn more fuel to move, rubber specs are a bit weird, most ppl would use 40 or 45 profile.

yeah refreshed the ecu, i do a few oil changes in a year as it burns 3L's of oil every 3500km's, due for a rebuild soon i reckon, clutch doesnt have much meat left and im sitting at the lights with a stock clutch that feels like a triple plate LOL

Yeh, that's funny - mine does that too! And starts to spit water out - condensation i'd guess... And i don't thrash my car (not saying you do lol) and it's only got 53,000kms on the clock! Is there a mechanical explanation...?

Was very lucky and managed to pick up a genuine JDM centre console/armrest from an EK3 :)

It's not in too bad shape for it's age but will need a little TLC once I receive it:
- Has same interior colour at AUS GLi Civic (hard to find because ones in States have different trim) but needs some upholstery cleaner to tidy it up a bit
- 2 plastic clips are broken off on either side (importantly each side still has one on each but will probably still be lose will have to test it out) so might need to get some s/s clips instead or something
- Has a slight crack at bottom of frame but some Loctite will fix that so not a biggie
- Doesn't have coin holder at back but I can just use my current one instead

Basically from memory the EK model has a thin radiator which can cause car to overheat in hot aussie conditions, apparentally it melts. Any cheap aftermarket piece is better then the stock.

What kind of BS is that.

There is thousands of EK civics on the road with OEM radiator without issues.

No point in aftermarket unless you are tracking or you upgraded to a relatively larger motor.

And even then you still dont have to upgrade as I have used a stock D series radiator for a B series swap without issues for daily driving.

Stopped at Bald Hill Lookout, Stanwell Park on way home from airport.

I think this would be a GREAT place to organise an EG/EK drive for all you Sydney owners to come for a drive down to Wollongong on a nice Sunday morning/afternoon and then head across Sea Cliff Bridge to Wollongong Beach - would anyone be keen?

Its one of the issues i was looking into before buying my civic. Went from civic-supra-300zx and suprisingly back to civic. I just wanted to look at the issues i might face in ownership of the civic and that thin radiator thing i read was one of them. Honda didn't want to put to much money in making the ek civic so they put lower quality parts in some of it, to compete with other car makers during the recession. Can't remember where i read it from, its from those car tester people who test cars and quote them on power, feel, shape, design and ingenuity. All that mumbo jumbo.

So, if I'm mainly only doing short trips around Wollongong - basically no point right? More for distance/race driving?

As I said if thousands of civics drive around daily without issues why would you need to upgrade it?

If it aint broken or faulty why change it?

Yep, I mean if you had to change it because you had a problem then yes, you could understand that, but if it's all good and for the driving I do, best just leaving it with what I have :)

And yes, I also remember reading about Honda 'skimping out' on the EK model - think like you said Asian financial crisis was around this time...

Ive seen stock ej8 radiators cool boosted cars, kswapped eks, high mileage cars like mine and if honda sold the top tanks separately (which they dont) you could use one for well over 500,000 miles if you have used honda coolant since new

mine was as new when I blew my top tank last year, every row was perfect :) I have a koyo rep of the oem model (as the oem one for mine is 1100 and the ek4 was 900, I have no idea why the price diff when the ek4 is thicker, lol)

the koyo one is a near perfect replica and at 300 installed, a real gem :)

I bought new tyres for mine, waxed every panel, cleaned the inside, will replace the rear sway bar next month :) still havent got some parts in to recon some bits, slow shipping but it's all good :)

Ive had my car a long time had have gone years with no rear sway with good shocks, then with an oem ek4 sway, but Im going to a larger rear sway as Im replacing the lcas for newer bushes as well as adding camber adjustment to the rear. I changed the rear trailing arm bushes recently and noticed a difference :) I've avoided coilovers as in the Nissans Ive helped people build when theyre on the right setting for the track my arse does leave the seat on open roads when Id boot it around the bends lol

the konis I have atm are stiff enough in a light car, which will be forsale in a month :)

Tai
13-08-2010, 01:55 PM
Thicker rear sway bar?

I don't even think you got one in the first place lol.

Depends how thick you want to get and for what purpose.

You can pick up used EK4/EM1s up for about $50-150, they are 14mm i think in size.

Then you can get a EK9 one which is $300 new I think? but then you need an ASR brace to stiffen the rear subframe to prevent it from tearing due to the thicker sway bar.
Ek9 rear subframe is much stronger than other EK models.
EK9 RSB is about 23mm I think or 22 cant remember.

EK1.6LCIV
13-08-2010, 01:59 PM
yea I got an Si(Em1) model sway to fit years ago using oem parts and brackets, good mod, straight mount up with the right bolts and washers :)

but its not sufficent anymore for where Ive been taking the car on my spare time lol

then we do brakes...

offtopic, ek only section ftw :)

Ar, right so it's not just a matter of fitting a thicker rear bar unless you go an OEM EM1 ... always wondered why people talked about ASR braces lol ;)

Ok, might not be for a while, but will look into some Tein Super Streets as a starting point :)

Unless you go circuit racing , it's not really needed to get an EK9 rear sway bar.

Of course it helps but if you are on a budget then I would invest in coilovers better.

Some light weight wheels and better tyres also does wonders.

No point in awesome suspension when the tyres you are rolling on dont stick on the road when you want it to.
Remember the tyres and wheels are on the road the majority of the time when you drive your car.

I think coilovers are my best bet at this stage - don't do any circuit work...

I've got EMI rims on my EK with 195/50/15 - is it possible to fit 205s on these or would you need to go to a 16 inch rim?

mugen_ctr

u can fit 205, but they will bulge over the wheels and wont sit flat on edge

Depends on your budget, coilovers aint what u would call smooth ride, Bc an k-sports are entry level coilovers, so expect harsh ride, but more expensive like Buddyclubs and Tein are more better and more comfy, u get what u pay for i guess

E10 is good in later model cars because they're specced up to run on that shit... and i've harmed the main parts of an engine with it, but needless to say that the fuel injectors in my old Opel Vectra didn't like it, to the point where I had to get the injectors sonic cleaned after only using it once... and not even a full tank...

who do u go through to get your parts from Japan?

Alvis

normally i just search the net and sus out a few dealers depending on the part...

But for little stuff like this eBay is perfect. eBay seller is 'Kcgr27' he has a lot of JDM parts, communication was great and quick delivery too, so can't complain

I like the rear fog light, considered it for a while myself. Only thing that turned me off it was the fact that Hyundai Excels have similar lights at the rear as well...

Today I put my car into the workshop to get a new catch can setup installed as well as a service and the dizzy to get looked at. and possible new camshafts installed ;) maybe.

Awesome Thraed!

Today I put some coilovers into my EK1 sedan :)

http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy25/beeza4/100_0341-1.jpg

BC Racing BR Series coils with 32 level damper setting.

http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy25/beeza4/100_0360.jpg

It took 3 1/2hrs,I fart arsed around a bit..lol,the install was easy,no tricks :)

Next is corner balancing then wheel alignment!

its too high !!!

still 4wd spec !

beeza
22-08-2010, 11:21 PM
They are only a 45 profile tyre..I will get 50's next.

2 fingers gap at the front,1 1/2 at rear.It gives me a 110mm clearance at the front with the lowest point being the H Brace and cat, they are equally low.

So legally I can go 10mm more but the roads out where I drive wont allow for that unless I drive more carefully but I don't haha and will end up smashing something up under there.Every knock does damage, scrapes are OK though usually.

Bush roads...

The height will change when I get it corner balanced BUt I just can't go anymore really.

Cops are really targetting dumped cars and with this (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?137211-Defected-on-while-driving-WTF) new knowledge,I'm playing smart,I wasn't even gonna get coils because there's is way too many po po on the goldy BUT I don't live there anymore!

I'm Bush 4 Lyfe! lol

Alvis
22-08-2010, 11:24 PM
I think it sits sweet from a practical daily driver point of view - maybe lower if you were tracking it tho. How does it drive (i still have stock setup on my EK sedan lol)?

I was thinking about getting BCs a while back as I read some really good reports on them, but the one thing that put me off was the fact they're not ADR approved, so didn't want it to effect potential insurance issues etc.

But been told Tein Super Streets are ADR approved?

beeza
22-08-2010, 11:28 PM
Yeah, like I said when i get a 50 profile tyre it will look better, that will be 4 months or so away,I just need that clearance.

Another (dark) shot.I'll get some after the corner balancing.

Is it a pain to change the damper settings and height adjustment? They should have an electronic unit you can do it from in the car...

They can for damper, but no ones gonna fork out extra $$$ for a civic.

Seriously its not that hard to do it by hand.

And why would you want to add more weight to a D series civic?

mugen_ctr
23-08-2010, 12:20 AM
cant really see the benefit of running low suspension on a daily, its annoying as hell going over bumper, im only running kings low, an the exhaust scrapes over bumps :S 2 finger gaps u would think it would b enough clearance but not for me, bear in mind im running a 2.5 cat back so that might also be the problem, lol

Only real adr approved coilovers are those such as bilstein and Tein since they are built for australian roads if im not mistaken, they cost a fortune though :(

Seriously bro, find a sticker shop. Buy a huge pack of stickers I bought 80... probably could have done it with 30-40 and just go nuts. Don't worry about what you put where, put them in all different positions. Take care when you do corners or folds and it will come out looking pro.. I wasn't sure about how this looked but everyone has praised so I guess it came out ok.. lol

Give it a go

ANYWAY, one lesson I learnt tonight is that if you drive with your windows open a fair bit, this is what you're most likely to find on your roof lining and back seats:

I found it worked better spraying it on the rag rather than the upholstery; but just spray enough so it makes a soap/sud and clean it from there
