Hi guys,
Need help I have been advised by bob jane that my steering rack has movement. How do I fix this problem. I was also told that my car we drift to the left because of some problem with my cambar. The last wheel alignment I had done they didn't come back to me with all these other problems.
What could be causing the car to drift to left even after a wheel alignment the chassis is straight ?
Thanks,
Kris

if the rack itself is moving then just tighten up its mounting bolts, theres only a couple of bolts that hold it on. Did they say where the movement was eg. tie rod ends?

pretty vague description they gave you
if your rack is well and truely stuffed then you'll replace the entire rack, pretty sure the pinion and rack itself isn't really servicable
other than that you can check out your inner and outer tie rods, bent control arms, ball joints, etc

How much would replacing the steering rack cost? The exact words they used was there is movement in the steering rack

depends how much you can get the rack for
like i said, vague description
if they meant exactly what they said then replace the rack, no guaranteed to fix your problem though if your tie rods are stuffed

So best option would be to get pedders to check and give me a report so that I can fix it myself.

yeah probably if you can't be bothered doing some simple tests yourself to narrow it down

I have never actually had to fix any issues such as this so if I can get assistance on here instead of doing the safety check.

well if you have a jack handy, jack up the front and grab the wheel
grab 12 and 6 and give it quick and sharp jerks, any movement? if yes than possibly wheel bearings, if you replace the wheel bearings look at replacing the lower ball joint too
grab 9 and 3 and give it quick and sharp jerks, any movement? if yes then possibly tie rods, if you have to replace them just replace them together(both inner and outer)
grab the inner tie rod and hold the outer tie rod steady and give it quick and sharp jerks, any movement? if yes then possibly the inner ball joint and if that's busted then it's probably time to change the outer tie rod too
get to the steering wheel and see whether theres any freeplay. pretty sure anything under 10mm is acceptable, if it's any more then you might need to adjust the steering rack and failing that the pinion and/or rack has probably been damaged(you can do this test while on the floor or driving)

not really, have to track down individual parts

it could be the tie rod ends or it could be the rack itself is loose, tighten up the bolts that hold the steering rack and see if it makes a difference, if not then its probably your tie rod ends.
