Hello all...

ED or EF Civic fan for a number of years but new to the forums, I love the old school appeal of these vehicles, I just wanted to know what sort of engine and gearbox would best suit?
I know many people have taken different paths in the modification of these little beasts.

B16A, B16, B18C, B18????

Can anybody give me some advice as I am a little in the dark...

Thanks

Custom LSX build.

lol, what do you mean by best,

best due to it being the cheapest to build,

best coz it revs the most highest and easiest

best coz it will give you the best dyno figures

or best fuel economy?

need a specific question mang

OK my bad. I should of specified looking for overall performance, something that likes to rev has a little power and isn't going to cost me an arm or a leg.

D Series
B Series

I'm stuck... sorry.

deffently a B seriers
cheapest wil be B16A2
if you want something with more power and still relativly affordable then the B18C2
if you really want performance but it will cost more then you probably expect then the B18C7

Gl with choice but just remmember "DO IT ONCE DO IT RIGHT"

I'd love to get a little vtec monster, funds are quiet low at this point in time. So that may have to wait for a while.
I was doing a little research this afternoon a friend of mine previously owned a 1991 LS Integra with a B18A1 which was mildly worked with exhaust, air filter, headers and cams. It had better gains than stock.
Would this be an engine to consider instead of looking at the vtec option?

B18A1= no vtec

Yes I am aware the engine doesn't have vtec but I was asking if it would be a good option seeing as I can't quite afford a vtec engine.

Decided to go with the Integra LS engine DOHC 1.8 B18A1 just because of availability and price...

A nice choice for a cheap power-up. You'll need a set of aftermarket engine mounts for the B-Series, but a set of headers, 2 1/4" exhaust and sports muffler, plus maybe an aftermarket air filter (in the original airbox), and you should enjoy the ride. Use the LS front brakes, and do a rear upgrade (again to the LS rear brakes - do the whole arm), as well as front and rear sway bars.

Remember to upgrade the Brake booster, MC and 4040 Proportioning Valve off the LS too!

There's plenty of threads on here to guide your way.

Good luck,

Peter

I would also add: try and get a cable operated B16 gearbox, the shorter gear ratios will keep the motors revs up.

Thanks for your advice... how much would the engine mounts cost? and where would I be able to source them?

depends if you buy local or from the US. US is cheaper but you have to wait longer.

yonas on here sells them:

you'd be after EFB1 or EFB2 depending on what gearbox you use

Sure thanks again ill check that out, in terms of a gearbox wouldn't the B18A1 original box do the job? or would something else be better suited?

yes a B18A1 gearbox will work also as its also cable operated. I just say get a B16A box because it will be more responsive than the B18A1 box. shorter gears mean the car will stay closer to peak power and torque when going through the gears

hmmm I wouldn't call this a little project. its not massive but still a fair amount of work

kavla

No in terms of performance no its not massive, in terms of price yes

When you say you have a 'small budget' what amount exactly are we looking at?

The conversion labour cost will be what really costs you. Spending a little more on the engine would make it more worthwhile.

I think I was a little to concerned with price and not concerned with the power. After doing a little homework over the weekend I think i am now sold on the idea of either the B18C or B16A, sure it may cost a little more but overall it is a better set up.

Just have to save a little more but I'm sure it will be worth every dollar.

'Do it once, do it right'

I recommend not wasting money on conversions that yield virtually no performance, when you need to pay the same labour either way.

Thumbs up to VTEC B-series :)
